Blood Moon on 27/07/2018

Last Friday there was a total eclipse of the moon combined with what is called a Blood Moon. It was perfectly lined up - hence the Blood moon. It was visible in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, with Africa getting the best show.

The red colour comes from the fact that while the moon is in total shadow, light from the sun passes through Earth's atmosphere all around the earth and is bent toward the moon. So, the light that can be seen is refracted through the earth's shadow, and this light looks red - as with a sunset.

it was the longest total eclipse of the century and here it went on from 8.00 pm until after midnight.

I battled to get any decent photos - modern cameras are too clever for their own good sometimes. I eventually had to go full manual, including manual focusing and managed eventually to get the pics below.

The pic below shows the moon just before total eclipse.

And below shows just after. In this one, Mars is visible at 8 o'clock (close to the moon).

Incredible images, Kevin. Not visible from +40.17N 77.25W - nor anything else in the sky except clouds and rain for several days, so also missed the full moon and close view of Mars, alas.

But your magnificent moon shots make up for it!

Thanks for posting these.

Don

Fantastic images, thanks Kevin. The moon looks beautiful, but that red color scares something.

Moon photos for July 2018

Here are a few shots I took during this month. I am trying to learn how to take pictures of the moon, it is not as easy as I thought it would be.

These are cool! I managed to take some shots, too. The first two show Mars which was directly below the moon, the next show the moon during the hiatus and the last two show the moon getting out of Earth's shadow. Apologies for the crappy quality but my cam is not very good at night shots of space objects.

Love the pics guys! Thanks for letting us who were in the wrong section of the world look over your shoulders, so to speak.

for those of us in the Western Hemisphere, north of the equator, we get our own blood moon in January of 2019
