Exclamation Butt joints -- help!

Working on this P-12 from Roman V I realize I really can't do butt joints worth a tinker's damn. Anybody out there have any suggestions?

I guess I may be just too much of a perfectionist to do paper models....

If possible use joining strips. The help align the parts and provide some support.

If not possible then practice dry fitting until you are sure of the alignment then apply the glue and hold in position for at least 20 seconds.

Sometimes Aleene's Fast Grab Tacky Glue helps because it dries a little quicker and provides a strong bond.

What do you call "butt joints"? Put a picture, it would help.

When I am working on a model that has several parts that should be flush, I'll print a second copy on printer paper. I use this to create a set of tabs that are behind the cardstock so the pieces can be fitted flush instead of overlapped. I used this to make a life-sized Deadpool head that came out amazing.

SCE:

This is what I do but it is very time consuming. I just think I need to train myself to do true butt joints and I should be fine.

JohnGay:

That is simply a splendid suggestion!! I will certainly think about when I am doing butt joints. On the P-12E that I am working on it would also provide inside coloring on the engine cowling if I reversed the backing piece.

Thanks guys. I hope others stop by to make their comments.

One trick i picked up from a fellow member, Ron Burns, is to punch two holes in the former, and use a cross locking tweezers to position and pull the former close to the edge and position the former as square as i can get it

This isn't a great image, but this is the Deadpool head I was talking about.

I cut the glue tabs off the cardstock pieces so they could join flush. Then I cut about a 1/4" or so margin on the plain-paper copy with the glue tabs attached. I glued this under the edge of the cardstock piece so the glue tabs were under the cardstock and the pieces would join flush instead. I also edge colored the cardstock with red and black where needed to help the joints blend even better.
This is just a trick I figured out making several copies of this head.

Now I understand, it is what we say here "edge to edge" by what I see in the photo. Make lashes, for me it is the most practical.
