Rest In Peace, HAL 9000

We also lost the voice of HAL 9000 on Sunday, Douglas Rain

St. Peter?

Seriously, few years back there was a rumour going around some Universities in Ontario about someone using his voice for one of AI comps being developed. They had to change voice as it was creeping the hell out of some students. Kubrick did well with his choice for Hal. So many years later it still works as intended.

I will never forget the voice, above all things from a classic, that voice is the most memorable.

Many years ago, I saw an Apple computer at CompUSA and idly began clicking the mouse. Unbeknownst to me, the sales staff had replaced the standard Apple noises with a "2001: A Space Odyssey" sound file...

"Just what do you think you're doing, Dave?"

IT KNOWS MY NAME!

I had already jumped back across the aisle before I realized what happened. Thank you, Douglas Rain, for creating such an iconic audio performance -- and for leaving me with a lingering distrust of computer artificial intelligence. Fortunately they haven't taken over yet -- right, Alexa?

David T. Okamura

P.S. Siri also agrees with me, so I guess we're all safe for now... ;-)

Remember what Stephen Hawking's Computer told John Oliver when he asked if we should still be afraid of AI:

For years, my computer/HAL says "Theres a message for you Dave" whenever I get an email.

I used to have nothing but HAL sounds on my original PC
but all I have left is this email message.

On a side note...
Chris Nolan (Dunkirk, Interstellar) has just completed a complete non-restoration print (actually multiple prints) of 2001
on original 70mm film stock from the actual original film negatives.

No resto work, other than basic film repair.
And no digital crap, just real film from the original film.

Apparently the colour and sound are like none other...exactly as it was originally printed and released.
3 or 4 prints will make the rounds into a few select theaters.
I'm guessing, only theaters that have film projectors?

I always thought that using a nearly monotone voice that did not have an emotional inflection was the creepiest part.

As for the voice it may already be here it is a AI component of the FactoryTalk Analytics system developed by Rockwell Automation and Its name is Shelby.
This Link to a presentation about Shelby. fast forward to the 4:23 minute mark.
