Many thanks for your thoughtful review, Don.
A group of us from the U.S. Army War College are going to see the film on 27 December. We recently showed Journey's End as part of our Strategic Art Film Program. A powerful film that ends with the complete obliteration by the opening barrage of the German Spring 1918 offensive of the trenches where the action of the film had taken place. Don |

Saw a story about this on the news a few months ago when it was in post production, I'm pretty sure they mentioned that he made no money from this, he donated his time and the resources of WETA labs, his special effects company, just so people could see it like this.
And to people saying it's been done before or it brings nothing new... Seriously? It's never been done like this before, with the technology he used and obviously it's not going to provide new information about stuff that's been in the history books for 100 years. He was just modernizing footage, and has done a spectacular job of it. Will he profit from the screening of it? Maybe. Does he deserve to? Why not? |

"They shall not grow old" is a fantastic piece of work. Weta Labs pulled the IWM movies apart frame by frame and rebuilt the movies into modern formats using the information in the old clips. It's a wonder the North Island of New Zealand didn't have brownouts with the amount of computing power deployed on this project. The only false note are the green tanks - they weren't - after the early Mark I tanks painted in Solomon camouflage schemes the British tanks were uniformly brown. The Tank Museum at Bovington apparently were not best pleased by this.

Barring a blizzard, I plan on seeing it again on the 27th. I'm sure I missed a lot the first time around. I will stay for the follow on "making of" documentary as well. A buddy told me it was excellent and well worth watching.

lol I noticed in one scene, a soldier eating what looked like soup or stew.
It was a deep earthy colour...like pea soup, or vegetable stew... and yet, beside him was a container of white creamed oats. It jumped out at me for some reason. Funny what you notice. I've never been a fan of colourized films...it always looks overdone or the colours don't look right. But this is some of the best colourizing I have ever seen.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film. Especially because it wasn’t a history or morality play. As Jackson stated in the aftershow, it is a simple recounting or what an English soldier’s experience was before, during, and briefly after the war.
It was moving. Interesting. Dramatic.

Just saw it, Great documentary
I have to say that a lot of work went into this rendition of modifying and colorizing original WW1 movies.
Since movies were new at that time and especially war movies, actual combat footage is rare, so most of the scenes are of soldiers in training and trenches or doing everyday tasks to stay alive. The narrations give a first hand feel to the life. Since there is so much material available, I think that there will be other movies coming up like air and naval warfare. Worthwhile movie to see. I liked it a lot. Isaac
