NASA's New Horizons flyby of Ultima Thule: January 1, 2019

The mission of NASA's New Horizons probe didn't end after it flew past Pluto in July 2015, it kept on going into the outer reaches of the solar system.

In just a few days, New Horizons will reach an even more distant object in the Kuiper Belt region nicknamed "Ultima Thule" (2014 MU69) on January 1, 2019. This will be the farthest solar system object ever imaged close up. No mission has encountered this type of object before, and no one knows exactly what New Horizons will see -- Ultima could be a single object, or a binary object.

The Planetary Radio Podcast held an interview with Alan Stern, New Horizons' Principal Investigator a few days ago on the upcoming flyby. The interview starts just past the six-minute mark:

Cheers, Happy 2019, and Go New Horizons!

Some of the coverage times have been changed slightly on January 1st, and Brian May (Queen guitarist) also will also play/release his New Horizons song then.

New Horizons transmitted new photos this month, which included its highest resolution image.

Also earlier in the month, new data suggested Ultima Thule is more flat than spherical.
