Apollo 11

As we approach the 50th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 mission, I decided to pull this out of storage and rehang it in a deserving spot.

NASA invited/hired noted pencil artist Paul Calle to observe and create several drawings of the suit-up and launch.
I purchased this piece at the National Air and Space Museum in the early 1980’s.
It’s approximately 20" x 30" (full white space) and the lithograph was made from an etched stone plate. Only 1,000 copies were made from the stone plate, then it was destroyed so no more could be made by that method.
Paul Calle’s Pencil renderings are raw and powerful.
The print is signed by the artist and Neil Armstrong. Wish the photo was better but did not want to remove from the frame.

After seeing the trailer of the decumentary that was made from newly found and restored 70mm footage of Apollo 11, I was looking forward to see it in a cinema near by, but the first thing I heard was that is only would be shown in a single theatre about 300 KM away from where I live. Well, too bad. That's just a little too far away.
Yesterday a friend of mine mailed that he wanted to see that movie and lo, and behold, it was playing in town! Well I'll be darned. He knew I am a big space fanatic, and well, I am going to see it tomorrow on the big screen! Really looking forward to it.

I sure did! Amazing footage, Great way of storytelling (No voice- over, just the radio communications between pad and cape, flight audio from Houston, the spacecraft and some Cronkite here and there. The only thing I had to ignore were the often incorrect translations in the Dutch subtitles. But hey, I am a nerd and most folks aren't.
In the end it is a very impressive story which tells itself. A 5-star recommendation. Go and see it if you can.

Indeed he was. Some of his Native American art could knock you over!

I’ve really gotten into the Apollo 11 series on , I believe, the Smithsonian Channel.
Much more of a race and fly by the seat of your pants than they made it seem.
After I finish reading the two WWII books I’m on, I am going to pull out and re-read Moon Lander. Incredible book about the development of the LEM.
