Today Athletic History is made

Today Athletic History has been made!

Real History and an athletic barrier broken to celebrate!

A fabulous human achievement!

----------------------------

Euild Kipchoge (a Kenyan runner from the Nandi Hills) broke the 2-hour barrier for the marathon (26.2 miles or 42.2 kilometres)!

Not since Rodger Bannister broke the 4-minute mile in 1954 has there been an athletic barrier of this significance broken.

The similarities are also interesting ...an "impossible" barrier broken, no aids (other then pacers) and a quiet introspective modest runner.

--------------------------------

Euild comes from the Nandi Hills, an area that has generated many superb runners, and a great tea-growing region. It is a poor rural area and the children traditionally run 2 to five miles per day to school - which, combined with the alttitude, is the reason for the Nandi Hills having generated so many running greats. Kipchoge Keino may be one name people remember.

Yeah, I read about it in the news today. 1:59:40, truly amazing. These guys run faster than 21 km per hour on average! I used to run semi marathons in the same time, ha, ha, but I guess I’m slightly older and don’t weigh 60 kgs. Just a little bit more, just a bit .

Erik - I didn't know it was happening. My tolerance level for sports and athletics is low nowadays with all the "drama" that goes on.

I caught it by mistake live on the radio (!) - and how exciting it was in that medium!

I just barely managed not to die running a 3 hr 46 min marathon back when I was in shape and not arthritic. The sub 2-hours is just incredible and completely insane. I think he ran a good majority of that race at or under the 4 min/mile pace. Definitely under 5 min/mile.
