Thoughts go out to all our aussie neigbours.Such devestation .We are 2000kms away and our skies are red from their fires,While any deaths are heartbreaking thankfully the human toll has been relatively low so far however add to it the estimated 5 million animal deaths and you get some idea of whats going on .

Even Polish forums have reports on this.There is sizable Polish contingent there too.

Last I heard some 200 arson suspects have been arrested and investigations are ongoing.

Begins to look a lot like organized event much like fires in Brazilian Amazon some time ago.That one also had suspects arrested but nothing was announced afterwards.

they have huge bush fires every year but never on this scale before

That's around 25 dead and close to 500 million animals (mammals, birds, reptiles)... That's not a typo.

2500+ buildings lost, 1500+ of those are homes.

I'm seeing a lot of conflicting reports, mostly in the foreign press, but that's nothing unusual... We still don't really know the full extent of it here yet and the fires are still burning, some are still out of control.

Like herky said, we have bushfires every year in the hot season, we had some very bad ones almost 10 years ago near where I live but this years fires are unprecedented, for so many fires across so many states to be burning out of control like this at the same time. It's stretched our resources pretty thin, the army and navy have been helping out, one town had to be evacuated by the navy on a supply ship because there was no other way out for that many people and too many to fly out by chopper.

There are spare crews being flown in from all over the world, our crews are exhausted, some of these fires have been burning for months.

You just can't imagine what it must be like there. I saw a video of a fire crew in their truck surrounded by fire, horrifying.
