Hi All,

I didn't see 1942s Captains of the Clouds mentioned yet. Lots of bush pilot stuff and terrific footage of early-war Canadian airfields and aircraft. And there's nothing wrong with Brenda Marshall's fuselage either. If you catch this film in a double feature with 1941s Dive Bomber, they will cure your color blindness.

And don't miss 1971s Murphy's War, staring Peter O'Toole. Not a lot of flying in the movie, but the scene where O'Toole beats the snot out of a Grumman J2F Duck, (actually flown by movie great Frank Tallman) is worth the wait.

Score and fold,

Thumb Dog

I recommend a series that I liked and that is quite good is "girly air force" is that in an extraterrestrial invasion some space ships destroyed the most important cities of China but the air forces of Russia, Japan and the United States develop modifications of current fighters so that these are at the level of the XI (extraterrestrial ships) and these are piloted by pilot girls who were also modified to fly to more than 9G

I'm partial to The Bridges at Toko-Ri and 12 O'clock High.

Well, don't bother adding Midway(2019) to this list! lol
What a waste of two and a half hours.
Not since Red Tails have I been this disappointed in a film.

I mean, the documentary side of it is okay...
and if it was a film made in the 1950s, I would have probably said "good Hollywood war film".

But its a CGI bad dream...and some pretty cheap looking CGI.
Every scene appears to be filmed against a filmed background like they used to do in old films.
In fact, the whole thing looks like it was filmed in Black and White, then tinted with colour.
I'm guessing that was the effect they were going for...like an old postcard...but why?

But its the flying stuff that annoyed me the most.
If you can get past all the cocky attitudes and Top Gun acting and constant bickering,
the aircraft scenes are overblown, far fetched and mostly physically impossible even for modern fighters and pilots.

And why does everyone, Japanese and US, constantly fly at 30 feet off the deck?
Japanese planes attacking at Pearl Harbor, flying between the burning ships, at deck level, shooting at fleeing sailors.
Even the American planes constantly narrowly missing the structures and decks of Japanese ships.

I knew this was going to be another Hollywood Pearl Harbor, but I didn't think it could be worse.
A couple of times I almost cheered for the Japanese ... lol.

Just my two cents.

don't worry just wait until June or July and you will see the 2 part of top gun and you will not be discouraged (with only the trailers I know that this sequel will be at the level of the first movie although it will be with the F / A 18 and not with the mythic Tomcat shows that he maintains the ecsence of the first that and that this time also Tom Cruse will pilot the F-18)

sorry...didn't like Top Gun...Tom Cruise makes me laugh.
No interest in seeing him pretend to fly the plane.

...
Good British Aviation films (dated, yes, I know, and a bit twisted on the facts, but still worth watching...)

Reach For The Sky
High Flight
First of the Few

Lot of good vintage films to be found on youtube.

and not found on youtube, but the best flying film of the bunch:
The Battle of Britain

Found a good list of some great RAF related films on IMDB.
Some I've never seen and must look for.

No mention yet of Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo with actual footage of B25's flying.

Thats what I like about old (30s, 40s and 50s) British and US films....
they used real footage of the correct vehicles wherever possible.
they used real aircraft and vehicles in filming, as much as they could get their hands on them.

Maybe too much? and they ended up destroying a few that could have been restored.

Unfortunately, by the 1960s, almost all vehicle remnants of WW2 were gone or in museums, and thats when movie companies resorted to stand-ins.
We all know and love The Battle of the Bulge. lol

And now that we have CGI, the effort to film real planes is respectably limited.
Its cheaper, less risky, and you can make planes do things they can't do in real life.

Thats another reason I won't bother with Top Gun 2...
did people forget that scale models were used in the original?

And for this new movie, while I am fully aware that Cruise and his bunch visited Air Bases and Carriers
and got to sit and fly(passenger) in a real F18, theres no way real F-18s were used
for all the filming or wild stunt flying.
Would the Air Force risk real aircraft and Pilots? NO
Would anyone allow the filmmakers to risk billion dollar aircraft? NO
Would the AF allow a 58 yr old wannabe top gun movie star to fly one of their cutting edge Fighter aircraft?...I'll let you answer that.

So, they film a few scenes on the ground, green screen it and cgi the rest.
Cut in a few actual air force demos and fly-bys and you've got Top Gun 2.
Don't believe what Tommy Boy and his Scientologist propaganda tell you! lol

Sorry...did I get sidetracked again? LOL

one of the better flying anime is Area 88. the aircraft and the flying sequences are very well done for the age of the series.
