Article to appear in Nautical Research Journal
My article on paper ship models, and all the photos, have been submitted to the Nautical Research Journal, a quarterly publication for serious model ship builders. I believe the piece is slated to appear in the June 2020 issue. I hope we can lure a few wood-butchers and sprue-benders over to the "Dark Side."
My thanks to everyone who sent me photos. I regret that I couldn't use them all and NRJ may not use all that I sent. But I have seen some truly impressive models in the course of this project. Cheers, --David

The first and so far the only place I have seen large gathering of paper models in Toronto was in yachting club.I was a guest of a member there and from what I understood most of boat builders either did them and still build them for fun.

Cool! The models featured in the montage image are all quite grand.
Will admit to being especially partial to the sidewheelers.

That is great. It should open a few eyes and tempt a few souls.

Last May, I took three of my paper ship models to the annual model ship contest at the Manitowoc (WI) Maritime Museum -- GPM Bismarck, MM Orp Piorun, and Kooklik's 1:72 U-boat. I didn't enter the contest -- there was no category for paper models -- but they gave me a display table in the contest room.
I saw some amazing models in wood, plastic, and resin. At my table, I heard so many comments like, "amazing," "unbelievable," "I had no idea," and the inevitable, "Are you sure they aren't plastic?" I suspect that a lot of "traditional" ship modelers associate paper models with cereal boxes and kids' toys. If they accomplish nothing else, I hope the article and photos will help give paper ships their rightful place as "serious" scale models.
