Both of those would certainly be considered iconic models in their own right, and would offer dozens, if not hundreds of possibilities for paint schemes.

Not to mention that once the bodies were worked out, THEN you could change the parts necessary to make an SD40 (namely dynamic brake section, clean air room, walkways and trucks).

Don't forget the SD38, or the GP/SD39 locomotives, either!

And just a heads up DAdB:

You're going to find references to "SD40" and "SD40-2" (as well as "GP40" and "GP40-2" and so on).

While these locomotives are similar, they are not exactly the same. The "-2" versions have many small differences that will either make or break a model.

Great idea Joshua (and others for the follow-up suggestions).

Some food for thought Diderick!

Definitely. I think 'you all' have convinced me to go for the GP 40 first, then (if that is a success) perhaps follow up with other versions. We will be very grateful for all drawings and other tips: all this is undiscovered country for us, so we depend on you and the internet.

A humble suggestion?

Give us periodic updates on what you've found and what direction(s) you plan to go.

There's enough collective interest and knowledge here that we can keep you from going too far astray.

Will do. For now, anything on the GP-40 is welcome: I have nothing at the moment.. Pet grumble of designer Cor: it is often very difficult to find drawings of the top a locomotive!
