Nautical Research Journal spreading the word
The Summer 2020 issue of the Nautical Research Journal included my article on paper ship models, with 17 color photos of some of the best examples. Some of those models and photos came from members of this forum. The cover of that issue featured a photo of Shipyard's HMS Wolf built by Bartosz Klyszyṅski.
This morning, I received this note from NRJ Editor Paul Fortenoy, who graciously allowed me to share it: You might be interested to know that your article about paper ship models has provoked quite some reactions. I received an article from France about building a paper model of a Russian monitor (which was published in the September issue), I have an article in hand about building HMS Wolf (it's actually a mix of paper model making and wooden workmanship). I also have a substantial article coming from Poland on building 18th-century ships in paper, another one offered by the same Frenchman, and a suggested piece from a paper modeler in Germany. I really have to thank you for starting this flood! The winter issue of NRJ also features a paper model, the Russian monitor Paul mentioned in his note. --David

I first met Paul Fontenoy at the annual Ship Model Contest and Exhibit at the Manitowoc Maritime Museum in Wisconsin in 2019. As I gathered from our conversation there, his Journal was devoted to traditional wooden ship models. Paul was aware of paper models but not of how far they have come.
To put paper ship models on the cover is, I believe, a real departure for the Journal. Some of his readers would probably raise an eyebrow at the idea, but they will be pleasantly surprised when they see the museum-quality paper models on the cover and inside. It certainly adds another dimension to a traditional hobby. We are becoming less and less an "underground" hobby, though that was never the case in Europe.

Wow. That is very good. Congrats.
I wonder how many "That's paper?" comments were made.
