Textures

I was wondering the other day about the meaning of “textures”. Here's why:

Back in the day” (my old ones) “texture” refereed to the surface of a material. Burlap has a rough, fuzzy texture. The texture of silk if far different from burlap, and, say, canvas. Now if one were to print or paint something on a piece of canvas, the canvas would have a certain texture, but the image would be, in my mind, and in terms of my (one) art class, a graphic. Graphic designers create images and words, say for brochures. They also consider the texture of the stock to be used; will it be slick, ordinary, or maybe have an embossed surface.

Now along comes the use of “texture” that seems to mean, at least in the paper model world, the graphics printed on a material, even if it is burlap. How did that happen? And when?.

I'm not finding fault, just wondering.

Jim,
I think it comes from a 3D modeling term which usually does mean "texture" in our old-fashioned sense but also includes any image that they want to wrap around the object.

In the graphics world, the term would be "fill" referencing a colour, gradient, pattern, image or simulated texture fill within a defined area.

"Texture" is the alternate word for "skin" in 3D modeling, since the skin that is applied over a 3D framework is often an image of a surface or texture.

Texture Maps

@WVA,

I think what you're looking for is called "Texture Mapping". Here's a search URL which explains its use:

texture maps explained - Google Search

Texture Maps are a large part of the "magic" of CGI...,

Thank you, Bill, Dave and Gil. Once again, "ask and you shall receive" proves true on this forum! And, obviously, I am way behind the times in today's terms and technology. A lot less "wondering" now, and time for more learning.

We can't repeat some real things in paper models. Therefore we have to draw them, i.e. create digital texture.
