Heard about it on the news today, very sad to realize that yet another 60s and/or 70s rock phenomenon has passed on. I remember as a 13 or 14-year old we were crazy about Paradise by the Dashboard Light, back in those early high school days. "What's it gonna be boy, yes or no? Let me sleep on it, baby, baby, let me sleep on it", what a classic! Have a good eternal journey, Marvin Lee Aday.

I saw Meatloaf live back in....I don't know...way back...late 70s...early 80s...
he was the opening act at an ELO concert, so I guess this was some time after he was big. I was only really interested in seeing Ellen Foley, but I guess she only did the original recording. He had some other girl singer in a white outfit singing Paradise. maybe it was Karla DeVito, I don't know. He was still very fat...in his white shirt with the baggy cuffs...sweating profusely. But he could sing. I bought Bat out of Hell in the 70s...he definitely had a powerful voice. Unfortunately, in later years, he turned into quite the aggressive looney. Mental problems I think. I saw him attack people on reality tv shows. I think he was on Big brother or one of those shows, and was quite unhinged. Still, its a shame to see another one bite the dust (as Freddie would say). I saw Freddie live too!...and then he wasn't. Too bad he didn't make it to 74

I wasn't a big fan of his music but I respected him as a great singer. I mostly admired him for his acting even if he wasn't doing it all that often or playing major roles. I liked him.
For me he will always be Robert Paulson. |

Who is Robert Paulson?
Explain. Anyone remember the rumor as to how Aday chose the name Meatloaf? If you're a fan of Rocky Horror Show you should know this.

The one about being born very red, his dad wanted the name tag to read "meat".
Or the one about stepping on the football coaches foot? Hot patootie, bless my soul.

Meatloaf, in my mind, is always associated with Jim Steinman, who died last year. The songs that Jim wrote and Meatloaf performed only made sense to me if I thought of them as a fusion of rock and operatic arias especially Wagner - an unlikely combination.
I believe Meatloaf wrestled with the demons from a troubled childhood most of his adult life but one cannot deny his singing ability - RIP. Charlie |
