Saws and saw blades in paper modeling
Hi all,
I have been wondering(those who know me, know this can be divergently wild)about saws and saw blades in paper modeling. While I can use the big bigger retractable knives, and the snap off kind, or the long cuts in former stock, and use the vertical cut method of trimming parts, I have wanted to use saws for some of the medium sized, or detail parts. I have those miter saw blades and boxes, and I have seen those saw blades that can fit in a hobby knife handle, and I have even seen coping saws with various blades in those. If you use saws and saw blades, what do you use, and provide a link or picture of what you have, please? Rick

I have used a Pocket Size Bow Saw from MicroMark with Jeweler's Saw Blades from Widget Supply to cut formers and other parts from thick chipboard.
Each square is 1 inch/25.4 mm

i use a jewellers piering saw at work to make clock hands and trained as a jeweller so used one to cut out formers the top was fine but the underside was quite ragged as the blades cut on the downward stroke. but some masking tape on the back and the finest blades you can get 4/0 or finer 6/0. sorry no picks.

This is very interesting, as I have a model in my stash that uses 2mm (!) card for some of the formers, and I’ve been wondering how to cut it. I thought a jeweler’s saw might be the right tool, but the specific details are very helpful, such as the use of the masking tape. Rick, can you point me toward the hobby knife saw blades? I’ve heard of them but not found them.

electric jigsaw
Don't you get electric modelling jig saws, aka scroll saws your side of the big pond? Dremel and Proxxon (both from Germany) are very good, especially if you want to use MDF board or really thick card for really large models. I could add a picture, but that might be regarded as unwanted advertising?

Yes we have scroll saws, both model bench and work bench sizes, I had not thought of that as a possibility
