Dying to create a model
Just over four years ago I wished to find time to create a model of a DeHavilland Beaver. Be very careful of what you wish for!
About that time I was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. I was confined for a month in an isolation room in a hospital for my own protection (my white blood cell count was almost nothing). After the initial shock of the diagnosis and the prognosis that I had a 25% chance of living, I found that I had a lot of free, uninterrupted time to design the model. The support that I found from my cohorts in Design Group Alpha was amazing, and life giving. Earlier in my lifetime (I am 53 years old) a similar diagnosis would have meant certain, swift death. Because of the research that has gone into this disease, I had a small chance of survival. I received harsh chemo treatments and ultimately a bone marrow transplant. Apparently now, I have been cured! No meds, and only periodic checkups that show no sign of recurrence! Now it is time for me to give back to the systems that saved my life. I have volunteered to train for and ride a 100 mile bike ride on September 11, in Northfield Minnesota. I am using this event to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I am hoping that the continued research will make the prognosis for future generations to be much brighter than I had. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society link in my signature will allow any of you to donate to this cause and help me to reach my fund raising goals. Last edited by -Jim G; 04-28-2010 at 09:40 PM. |

Of de Havillands...
Jim,
Nice that you're still with us and able to go bike riding. But you've left me wondering to whatever happened to Olivia's airplane design? +Gil |

Daddy did them for her. And that's a fact. Did you not know?

Compelling story Jim. I sent a small donation your way. Years ago I gave a bone marrow donation. Not a fun process, but I always wondered if it helped someone. I never knew, but judging by your success, I'd like to think it did.
Good luck in your training and your ultimate ride. Mike

Thanks!
I thought I should follow up on this thread because I have finished training for and riding the 100 mile bike ride. It turned out to be 105 miles. It took me about 7 hours in pretty windy conditions.
Thank you to everyone that supported me! I raised $2,850 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society I am in the back row just under the second E in JESSE. The gunman in the middle of the picture is a cardboard cutout (how is that for a cardmodeling link?) Last edited by -Jim G; 09-15-2010 at 07:03 PM. |
