I moved onto the frame/chassis next. This is easy enough to make. Note here that the individual long strip lying next to the printed part is to close-out the top of the assembled frame. This strip needs to be cut at the arrows with the longer portion finishing to the rear end of the frame and the smaller portion to the front.

I wanted the frame to be stiff, and I wasn't sure that I was going to be able to make a nice frame without a little assistance, so I inserted a coffee stir stick, or pieces thereof, inside. The image shows only the one piece, but I added it through the entire length of the part. It produced a nice stiff and straight part.

It wasn't obvious to me at first, but this frame is not supposed to be straight. There is supposed to be a slight bend in it at the arrows. I didn't want to break it in two either, so I just pressed several small holes on the external bend line and then gently formed a small angle. Final ajustment of the angle will be made when this part gets installed.

Great model and very good start. I'll be watching this. Love the Samba - both music and bus.

Thanks Blue, I have this one too and would like to get started on it, but it did seem a bot complicated at first glance. Can't wait to see more pics of this build.

Floor beams placed on chassis. Eventually this is going to be invisible as a floor pan will cover it all.

Herr Bluenoser;

Glad you're the guinea pig on this model. . .All the compound curves found on Volkswagens have kept me away from trying this one out (we owned a late model '74, but I much prefer the original split window buses).

Good luck. . .I may download this one.

Following with interest,
cbg

Bluenoser,

A very nice start, I will be following your build with interest as I have the Samba and the pick-up high on the to do list. The pick-up has simpler wheels and virtually no chassis to build for some one looking for some thing easier. I might add the Samba chassis and wheels to the pick-up just for more chalenge. They print out at the same scale.

Have one question: The zip files that I downloaded had a slight x/y scale problem, did you notice this or was it somthing I did or just the US vs European paper size? I edited the files to correct this and now the piece measurments match no matter the orientation on the pages.

George

hi Bluenoser
might have been my start you've seen
i messed up the frame and had to start over again
got it reprinted but that is as far as i have come yet
you're off to a very good start and i will follow this with great interest
got it printed in A3 and it seems to take the upscale well
trying to persuade my kid to do it with me :D
