VW Bus

So I have had this model saved for quite a long time now. I have been wanting to build almost since the time I got it. There was also a build thread of it started in this forum not too long ago as well.

Any way, I am going to have my kick at the can on this one too.
The model is available free at VW Samba Bus paper model Möwe Verlag KdF-Wagen

I am going to start with the wheels. There certainly appears to be enough parts to these just by themselves.

My printed out copy of the instructions are very faint and I had a difficult time deciphering the small print with any real certainty with regard to the wheel construction. Therefore, I made a larger copy of just the wheel instruction and then determined where the parts were supposed to go. This is what I came up with.

I did the tire sidewall first with the mounting ring base.

Next, an inner rim wall was added.

Now the other tire sidewall was made. This was made up to the same level of completion as the first side.

I then went on to make the wheel covers, but I wanted to pretty them up a bit so I applied an aluminum tape to it. Nice thing about this was that in addition to joining the cover together with the little joining strip, I was also able to let the overlap of the aluminum tape do some bonding work too. I glued the joiner in after the tape was holding everything together. I opted not to show the paper VW center piece and insead covered it in aluminum tape as well such that the entire cover now has that chrome look.

The tire tread has a full circumference inside strip. This not only serves to join the tread, but also is a spacer for up-coming parts, so you want to make sure that it gets centered inside.

Now to insert those center discs upto the spacer/joiner. This is going to require a trim to fit exercise (both sides).

The wheel cover has an addtional ring applied to it before it gets monted onto the wheel assembly.

Final installation of the previously assembled tire sidewalls and wheel cover will produce the tire as shown below. I made the inside hub assemblies, but did not install at this time.
