Lotus 2 11
I can't seem to open the text file with its .doc extension even though I have (I think) the correct Windows app to do the job. Can anyone please help me on this? Thank you. (I am a new member so I don't know my way around as well as I should; I am a very experienced model maker, however, having constructed models will 6000 parts (a ship) down to miniatures at 10 cm long ( also a ship by chance - I don't really "specialize" in them - actually liking classic car s the best.) Thanks for any help.

What are you trying to open? A .doc file should be opened by Microsoft Word, or if you don't have a copy, you can download Open Office from OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite for free which is a fully functional office suite that should be able to open it as well.

unless there are pictures in it, Wordpad should open a .doc file too.
All micro-crap OS since 95 or 98 have that free. But, yes, Add Open Office.org. It is a Good Freeware. Also try LibreOffice. Another Freeware.

Libre Office is now preferable to Open Office.
The reason for this is that recently Open Office was sold to Sun Systems, the original developers of Java. Some of those who had created Open Office objected to it being sold entire to Sun Systems. Thus arose Libre Office: in order that a completely FREE version may continue to exist and be available to the public. Kind and Respectful Regards my friends, Uyraell. |

Just to clear the things a little bit:
The-EDSEL: LibreOffice and OpenOffice are almost identical right now, LibreOffice has launched only a couple of minor versions (I think) since they branched from OpenOffice. So, some minor versions ago LibreOffice was OpenOffice Uyraell: LibreOffice was launched after Sun was bought by Oracle. Sun has bought StarOffice 5.2 from some German software company, then gave it as freeware ( $0 ), then upgraded it to StarOffice 6 (also $0), then changed it to OpenOffice (not only $0 but source code available free of charge too). Now OpenOffice is at major version 3, and since Sun was bought by Oracle, Sun's free software offers were cut down (Solaris, OpenSolaris, OpenOffice and maybe others). Oracle's attitude towards OpenOffice is what lead to developers creating a new branch from OpenOffice's free software, branch they call LibreOffice |
