McLaren M8b - YMjr Models - 1:24

Hello all.

This model is a revisit for me, it was the second paper model that I had built almost 7 years ago as the McLaren M8a from YMjr models. I always had concerns as the pictures on the net did not match the model very well until I found pictures of the M8b version. The model is missing the wing and various other detail items and errors such as the front fender vents are wrong.

As the model is a very well done pdf file, looking at it in Inkscape, I found it was easy to start applying modifications such as adding the driver name (Bruce McLaren in this case), and parts/sponsor decals. I also created parts for the rear wing in Autosketch and Inkscape.

I have attempted to contact YMjr, but have received no replies to a contact message on the Web Page I left over a week ago. The web page looks almost abandoned, the last update was in January 2012. As such, all of the changes I have made are for my personal use only. If the Moderators feel this is not an appropriate topic, please feel free to close it, just let me know.

The original model is 3 pages of parts, 1 instruction diagram, a txt and doc file in Czech which translates fine in Google Translate, I have found that the numbering and intuition are working fine.

The first pages have very little changes:

This is the page with most of the modifications:

These are the additional parts pages:

As you may notice, one of the pages is joiner strips. These do not come with the model, I created them and removed many of the tabs on the original where but joints provide a smoother surface.

Cutting and pasting have started, more pictures tomorrow.

David

Looking forward to seeing this one again. How did you work out the geometry on the joiner strips?

Cut and paste. Opening the pdf in Inkscape and ungrouping the page allowed me to use multiple select on the tabs, paste them in a new page as a single unit, belzer curve the points and create the base tab. Hope I explained it OK.

Hello all and here is some cut and paste.

First off is the tub and seats. I have seen pictures of the car with both seats and with just one. For convenience I have decided to use the two:

Here are parts for the rest of the chassis:

Now the steering, the plans provide for a fixed front end or movable. Of course I did the movable:

Started cutting the parts for the next section which is the front radiator. This has some interesting bends and I will explain my method.

Have a good one,

David

I've always been intrigued by these YMjr and will be following along with interest. Looks great so far.

Quick update, I just received an E-mail from Lubos Hora (YMjr) and the modifications are OK'd for free distribution.

After finishing the model I will submit it here.

Thanks VK, and actually it will be 3 models, #4: Bruce McLaren, #5: Denny Hulme and #3: the spare car.

Here is an update on the front radiator.

Intake supports and top glued together:

Intake folded into place:

Housing top glued in place:

Mounted to the chassis:

I have also been working on an alternate interior with only one seat.

Some minor details left on the front of the chassis and on to the engine next.

Hello all, not much today.

Spent most of the time designing the alternative interior and doing some test fitting. Should have the new version done tomorrow, if it comes out good, it will go in the #5 car.
