Dear Mike:
I am going to nitpick, It is minor, I ended up with a masters degree in Living history and have run as in real working threshing units and in both the thrasher is faced the other way from the steamer and the belt was tighter. your diorama brought back many memories to me at one time I fell off the hay wagon while pitching the wheat sheaves into the thrasher and bounced off the belt. Great work, Miles |

Miles,
Interesting. Why is the thresher the other way around? So the mechanism is driven in the right direction?

I just thought about this a bit more Miles.
Turning the thresher so the mechanism would run in the right direction surely doesn't matter. Just reverse the direction of the stream engine when its started.... So now you need to explain...!!!!

From this picture it looks like Mike got it about right ...
and from my memories of steam displays back in the 50's they often rigged the drive belts in a twisted figure of eight fashion, which would reverse the drive direction, but I was told that it tensioned the belt better for safety reasons. Perhaps Miles can explain this again for me as it was a long time ago now. Hmmm? That second photo turned out a bit small. You'll have to zoom into it to see the twisted belt properly.

The figure of eight is correct. Straight belts could only be used safely when the pulleys were lined up perfectly - so you will see those in pictures of old factories.
Using the figure of eight meant that by the torque, the belt would automatically stay in the correct position on both pulleys. I have just added Mike's pictures to my collection on https://www.flickr.com/photos/zeist_bouwplaten/ |

When we were running the antique sawmill, we would always do the figure-8 when we would connect the belt to the pto on the tractor

Belated kudos for this fine diorama, Mike.
I enjoyed the discussion about the configuration of steam engines and threshing machines. Whichever way the engine should be pointed, it looks like you better tighten up that there belt, Michael. Don Last edited by Don Boose; 02-29-2016 at 01:50 PM. |

Do a video search for thresher and steam tractor and you will see quite a few of those combinations at work.
