Brilliant model. My next challenge will be to build the early HOG you have in your avatar pic, AlanG.

Thank you. It is always nice to hear of someone building one of those H-Ds. I hope you will let us know how you get on (with pictures!) May I suggest that you get the kit from my web site grayer.me.uk if you have not already done so? The copy there is a somewhat updated version compared with the one in the download section here.

It amuses me to hear these early H-Ds called "Hogs", as the name invokes for me the unconventional, rebellious image of later times. The selling point of the early models was their staid, sophisticated nature - the marketing strap line was "The silent grey fellow"! Against that is the rather odd flap which can be opened to bypass the exhaust muffler "out of town", which presumably would have made it far from silent. Perhaps the seeds of rebellion were being sown even then.

Time for the front forks and handlebars. Nice and fiddly.

Nearly there... We now have the air intake and fuel tank. The intake is a bit odd, as it just sits inside the frame members, and then gets completely covered by the tank, so really might as well not be there at all. The tank is a really complicated shape, and took two goes to get moderately right.

Now you see it...

...and now you don't.

The final stage, the front wheel. Once again the hub and spokes are complex and difficult, but at least this time the complexity is a little bit visible through the brake discs. Again I made my own tyre though this method isn't quite so satisfactory on the smaller front wheel.

And so to fit the odds and ends left off previously, and it is done.

Some (slightly larger) completion pictures:

Something more dramatic:

This is the third model of a YZF-R1 series bike - previously we have had a red YZF-R1 in 1999 and a blue one in 2007. Here they are together, all reduced to roughly the same scale:

It is also the third "Ultra-Realistic" model, after the MT-01 in 2006 and the VMAX in 2009.

That's all, folks.
