Think you're having a laugh, Don! But actually I've tried that a few times. I generally get it to work OK on the lorries (bigger wheels, firm chassis) but on the cars it isn't successful. Impossible to centre properly so you just get a model that won't stand up well.

Test Shot

Keep in mind, Graham, that Papermate routinely builds 1/200 scale aircraft with rotating props.

Meanwhile, I have tried building a practice Death in Paradise at 1/60 scale and have begun what I hope will be a better one at 1/48.

I had a real problem with the forward edges of the roof, but think I know how to do better by being sure that I have shaped the compound curve fully before gluing up.

The bonnet is somewhat dished in in spite of the packing pieces that's Graham provides. Again, I will know better the next time.

Clearly, Graham has designed this model so well that even a duffer like me can put it together and have it look vaguely like Land Rover.

Well done, Graham!

Don

That's good! But at that scale it's not as tricky to do that. !-76th, 1-87th and 1-100th cars wouldn't do that! (Not heavy enough to roll like that)

Amendments

Don had a bit of difficulty with the mounting of the chassis, so I've now included a diagram that shows where it mounts:

Land Rover 110-inst.jpg

Also now on the file are a pair of axles that might help in mounting the whels (and serve as an aid if you decide to put 1mm rod through them to make the wheels rotate!)

Land Rover 110-axles.jpg

I'll send the amended file to all those who have grabbed it already.

Thanks for that diagram, Graham.

Yes. I mounted the chassis flush with the bottom of the body. It was too tight a fit, distorted the chassis a bit, and caused edges of the chassis to stick out into the wheel wells, not to mention that there was consequently no place to attach the front tabs.

With this diagram and what I learned from building the test shot, the next one at 1/48 should be better.

Many thanks for the kind and very helpful follow up.

Don

Hmm. Chassis shouldn't be a tight fit. It's 24.6mm wide and the body is 25.6mm wide so it should easily fit inside the body, even though it's mounted a few mm above the bottom edge.

May have been a craftsmanship problem. Will be very careful with scoring, cutting, and folding on the next one.

Both the Land Rover 110 "Death In Paradise" and the Land Rover 90 "Vera" are also available in O-scale (1/48th) now. Let me know if you need this version of either vehicle.

Prototype for everything dept.

Hah! Been told it's not easy to get the Land Rover's bonnet nice and flat - well, don't worry about it! I've just been watching a late episode of "Vera" (S7E2) and in one shot I get a nice view of the Land Rover's bonnet - with a huge dent in it, just where a crunch might occur when building the model!
