Modelik 8/00 1926 Mack Bulldog Tank Truck

The next model up on my bench is the 1926 Mack Bulldog Tank Truck published by Modelik. I have always liked the looks of this truck especially in the red Texaco livery. I have good memories building the Monogram kit about 40 years ago. This paper kit looks nice. It's made up of 11 pages of parts, 2 pages of assembly diagrams and 1 page of written instructions in Polish. The part sheets are printed in two colors; red and black. There is no weathering of any kind on the artwork so it up to the builder to add their own if desired. After studying the diagrams, this model appears to be suited for an intermediate builder with a few kits under their belt.

Stay tuned...

Are you going to make the drive chains with individual links?

I have seen one of our Polish friends on one of the Polish forums do this.

This looked like a fun build when I saw you with the kit at IPMC. And it has some color -- red! Have fun, and I'll be watching with interest.

Good luck! Ignore Rick's comment about the drive chains, I would like to see you finish this one within our life time....

I was glad to see you with this kit at the IPMC. One of my favorite trucks of all time. I look forward to the build.

I finally cut into the model the other night and so far I have to say things are not off to a good start. It's funny because I've built this model in my head many times just by looking at the parts in the book - but it's not until I actually started building it that I realized I'm in for a challenge.

Three parts in and not one fits as it should...

Part 1, the side rails, did not call for any extra reinforcement, so none was used. Not a huge problem, but if I were to do it over again I'd probably add at least an extra thickness of card stock to stiffen them up a bit more.

Part 2, the top "U" shape piece that makes up the rounded front part of the frame is not long enough to close the gap with the top of the side rails.

Part 3, the back cross member is too short to attach to top and bottom of the "C" shaped side rails as shown in the plans. I had to scratch build a new piece by cutting apart the original. But now after starting to build the other inside cross members, I discover it's also too wide causing the back end of the frame to flair out. To correct this I'll have to do a bit more surgery :(

Given all of these issues, It's safe to say I'll be painting this one.

I just hope the rest of the kit goes together better than this. I really like the Texaco markings and don't want to loose them.

Oh, just to make it clear, I WILL NOT be building individual links for the drive chain!

MODEL ON!

Same trucks, different pictures of what I sent earlier on FB.

BTW this museum is in Walcott, IA right at the Big Truck Stop there.

It is the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum. Admission is Free/donation. I highly recommend it if you ever find yourself passing through.

Kevin - Thanks for the details on the problems you have encountered. If anyone has the skill and experience to surmount the challenges, it is you.

Greg and Wayne - Outstanding images of Bulldogs.
