Burrell - Thomson

Here is one of the most unlikely vehicles I've seen - so I had to make it!

I came across it on the robotechnik-paper site following Darwin's thread a few weeks ago.

It's a very simplified version of a steam driven vehicle. I guess it could be seen as a vintage version of a modern truck tractor unit. The picture on the web site shows it a towing a canon.

If anyone decides to make it, make sure you follow the picture instructions, by making most of the sub assemblies first then refer to page two for the position of the parts - I didn't and almost had to start all over again.

It is quite an easy build but a bit fiddly as the vehicle is only 4 1/2 inches long. It even comes with a figure but unfortunately it is two front views which looks a bit odd when they are glued together.

I now have to decide what to make next.........

Cheers

Mike

It is an odd-looking giant of a ... well ... something. I have this one but was a little unsure about it as I didn't really know what it was. Thanks for the build information and pics Mike!

Mike - a nice little model.

It's already on my to do list - I am just about finished doing a repaint at the moment.

At the moment no printer, but I can access a top quality laser printer once a month - so I have to plan carefully for those occasions! And be patient!

Very nice build of a truly unusual subject, strikingly similar to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolas-Joseph_Cugnot 's steam carriage. And it was sensible enough not to install the boiler over the steering end of the vehicle...
How interesting to look back at history and see how, when new concepts arise, pioneers (ingenious, naive, smart or crazy, hard to tell at the time) try so many paths, most of which now seem preposterous or even absurd.

Thanks for all your comments.

I agree with you about pioneers - Look at Carl Benz - I don't think he would have imagined the speed of current cars - in his day it was deemed impossible to travel at 30MPH and survive!

It's not that long ago since Bill Gates thought that the UK would only need about 3 computers!

Tsk...tsk...step 1 - engage brain...step 2 - research before using keyboard.

"There is a world market for perhaps 5 computers" - said by Thomas Watson - founder of IBM in 1943. Bill Gates was hardly a gleam in anyone's eye in 1943.

The 30 mph barrier is derived from the reported proceedings of the Parliamentary enquiry into the Liverpool to Manchester railway where the steam engineer George Stephenson asserted that speeds of 30 mph were possible and safe on the railway. The committee found this totally outrageous. Stephenson's railway achieved speeds of 36 mph.

I really liked the model of the Burrell engine - there are very few models of the steam traction engines around. I've got the 1891 mortar on Landships II if you don't want to try to negotiate vk.com*-
the designer is Sergey Kamotsky.
