Mustang GT - Death Race

I have reached a bitter sweet moment and completed my second build ever. I chose the Mustang GT from the movie Death Race off of Latest Paper Model. This was quite a challenge for me and looking back I probably should have chosen something a bit easier for the first one but I learned a lot by trial and error and am mostly happy with the results.

I started with the front end. Lots of skinny parts for the bumper and headlights had me confused right off the bat. With no experience on what paper can actually do it took me a while of just looking at the same part for a very long time (and lots of tips from jaffro) before I could figure out what to do with it and how to make it look like the instructions wanted.

This model came with tons of tabs on all the parts, at first I thought that this would help me but as I continued into the build they became more and more of a hassle and I started cutting them off. They seemed to just be getting in the way more than they were actually helping me.

The instructions didn't really provide much of an order of operations so after completing most of the front end I went to the back and figured I would get that completed and then piece them together once they were both finished.

The back window has some sort of shield louvers on them. This is one of the first things that I changed with this build. After cutting all the bits out and dry fitting them I just couldn't see how I was supposed to fit all the parts provided into such a small space... so I improvised. I only included the actual curved bits that make up the louvers, the additional parts that were meant to be spacers I did not use. Overall I was pretty happy with how these came out.

Next up were the doors, this really helped the build come together for me and they went together pretty easy. Starting to look like a car

I think my favorite part of the build was the wheels. Lots are small parts so I took some extra time on these. I didn't paint much on this car as i'm not very good at shading, however the spokes on the wheels were originally grey and I wanted them to pop a bit more so I painted them black.

The back of this car has this large shield on it. This probably gave me the most trouble as I just couldn't figure out how it went together. I ended up building this twice. Once just to figure out how it folded together and a second time because I wanted it to look cleaner. It still took a beating from me but it came together eventually.

There was one other part of this build that I seemed to have a lot of trouble with and that was the guns. I couldn't for the life of me get these tiny little parts rolled to look anything like gun barrels. I ended up replacing them with cut up toothpicks. Unfortunately after doing so I realized that the toothpicks were a bit bigger than the original parts and I needed to make the base of the guns bigger. For this I ended up just drawing and cutting out the gun base but to match the size of the barrels I had just made. The smaller grey one was what it came with and the black one is what I replaced it with, so not too much of a change.

Last but not least were the armor on the windows. Now I cut these bits out for the front windshield and glued them on however I was not happy with them whatsoever. The fact that the paper was so thin and small they just looked really sloppy. For the windshield an both side windows I ended up just stacking and gluing a few pieces of paper together and cutting them to size.

Overall I am very happy with the way that it came out and can't wait to start something new. Here's the finished product...

Wink

Yes, I support that, it's great, if you had seen my first construction, it came out quite ugly, but I fell in love with paper. Very well done!

Difficult challenges teach a lot. And you seem to have face this one well.
The more you learn and the more you enjoy, the better. That's the idea.

Thank you, Sergio. I've been on the fence on if I would even post it or not. I suppose the more I stare at it the more it grows on me. Lol I had to start somewhere and while it's not perfect I did it myself and I'm pretty proud of that.

I was only here to spectate and was convinced to try something, turns out I really like it. There's so much to learn. This build taught me a lot already and I've only scratched the surface. Watching some of these guys and the skills they have is very inspiring, I can't wait to be as good as them one day. Happy to have started that journey. 😊😊

Haha you ain't kidding. You're right though. The hardest parts always teach the most. That's just part of the fun.

Look, about 8 years ago that I started in this hobby, I built everything, I was learning to reach a medium level, that's enough for me because I just want to relax and have fun, with paper I get it superbly, even if I do not stay perfect and have many mistakes, I am always satisfied and I have fun. One day, in January of this year, I joined the forum, you can not imagine what I learned in these months, watching the works of the boys, receiving advice, even the designers themselves They advise you. Many people friendly and willing to collaborate at any time. Seeing the result you achieved in your first construction, I'm sure you'll get very far! A cordial greeting Crystal, we hope to see more of your works.

You certainly picked a difficult model, and cars in themselves can be very difficult to build. Most car kits you see do not have the body folds or any of the difficult shapes you usually see on modern autos (those shapes are there to add rigidity to the metal), and simply draw lines on the graphics to indicate that there is something there. So this kit would be akin to building a more difficult airplane model, it is certainly not one I would have attempted as a second build. Good Job!!!

Thank you very much for your kind words. I"m excited to see where my next build takes me!

In all your time in the hobby, what was your favorite build so far that you have done and why?
