Although Dick Van Dyke is only my second favourite James Bond.
My number 1 James Bond is Peter Sellers.

I meant Peter Sellers.
He had signed on to play a serious James Bond, despite what everyone else was doing. He even hired his own script writer to rewrite his lines for him before finally walking out when they refused to make him James Bond.
The final movie was actually pieced together from the remains of three different movies they'd attempted to make before the studio halted production and told them to just edit together something that will work.
I just love Peter's devotion to believing he was the star of the movie he was only a bit-part of.

None of that is true but I agree with your praise of the great Peter Sellers.

Numerous script writers were involved on Casino Royale including Sellers.
Five Directors filming different segments that were difficult to edit together in the end because of style and continuity problems.
But not different films.

Sellers himself was an established scriptwriter and script contributor on Casino Royale, so he wouldn't hire someone else to rewrite his lines.
Its well known that Sellers had numerous issues around that time, and was known to disappear for days and not show up for work, which is one of the complaints about his acting contribution.
And why he was cut short from the film.
I know there was some personal issue directed towards Orson Welles who was also in the film.

And I just looked at the wikipedia entry on Casino Royale, and it suggests that Sellers had some desire for a more serious role as Bond (as claimed in unauthorized biographies).
Maybe that relates to a bigger part?
Since he was actually a script contributor, I can understand there being some conflicts with other writers and directors over elements of the script.
But this is a Goon we are talking about...and someone well versed in sharing the limelight...and he went into the role knowing what it was about.
This was built as a comedy movie, and Sellers was a comedy actor.

Biographies aren't always accurate...and there are other discrepancies in them that should lead you to always be suspicious.
And there are many conflicting biographies of Peter Sellers.
Maybe it should be part of acting school...that you must pen your own autobiography before you die.
Ar at least be forced to corroborate certain claims made in biographies!

Admittedly, my main source of Peter Sellers back-story was
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers which I truly enjoyed, although I do understand a movie is an artistic creation.
I also read up on Wiki about both Peter and Casino Royale, my favourite James Bond film.
As a comedic genius, Peter was outstanding and well worth the praise of his time.
As a person, we only have the word of those who were around him and not all of them may have truth foremost in their mind when relating someone else's life.
I tend to believe that, as with most truly amazingly creative people, there tends to be some interesting personality issues within the creative mind. Brian Wilson and Sid Barrett are prime examples of creative people who fell off the deep end pursuing their craft. Adam Ant and John Lennon also struggled with their identity -VS- what the public imagined.
Either way, people are far more complex and interesting than any biography or film can tell.

Well said John.

...
Now... has anyone actually seen the real Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?
I saw it, at a car show, back around 1969, 1970...
I have some photos somewhere, but I am having trouble finding them.

It was big!

And I heard it really didn't get along with Dick van Dyke.
Tried to rewrite its own scenes to avoid working with him.
This is all heresay of course...much of it from the unauthorized biography "My Mother...not a Car!"

Where is Chitty now?...I haven't looked it up.

ahh......
re Wikipedia...six Chittys were built... only one fully functional.
Peter Jackson bought it.
(His memorabilia collection is absolutely amazing by the way!)

Ah, too late to edit.

Did you time this for Dick Van Dyke's birthday today?
