Somewhere in Havana - Lada 2107

Here's my recently finished model and small diorama. I've decided to take a break from my HMAS Australia project and do something different.
The subject is a Lada 2107. It's based on Michal Rozinek's simple design but I modified it pretty heavily so I'd say it's rather a scratchbuilt.
I didn't calculate the scale but it's 6.6cm long when finished.
Diorama is entirely my own project, fully from scratch.

Beautiful work Kacper. It looks great in the diorama and that roof looks spectacular. Is very relaxing to build other things from time to time. I really like this little diorama, very well done!

Cool little diorama. My parents keep vacationing in Cuba and many of their pictures show old cars including Ladas. This really has a Havana feeling.

Thanks Sergio, Karol, Don.

The roof of the building is actually a texture modified and adjusted to fit the scale. It would be extremely tedious to make all these roof tiles as a separate parts.

Achieving that "Havana feeling" was my main aim. I've always loved Cuban history and culture; this country is just fascinating...
Not a long time ago, I had watched "The Cuba Libre Story" documentary mini-series, which I really recommend, and it inspired me to build this diorama.

Sometimes it's interesting how many strange things we can learn while working on our models. The license plates on my Lada are not random. First letter, "H", indicates Ciudad de La Habana, yellow color of the plates means that it's a private vehicle. I went to wikipedia to read something about the vehicle registration plate system of Cuba.

Such a small detail but gives a little more authenticity.

What many don't know is that there is a small size part of Cuban population with Polish,Russian and other eastern European roots. They are descendants of various workers and officials from 1970s. My dad runinto few guys like that there. They speak broken but decent Polish.

Thanks Michael. Looks like you've figured out it's my design... and yes you're right. This DeSoto is my first digitally designed model.

For quite a long time I was looking for a paper model of American car from the 1940s or 1950s which would be good for a Cuban diorama. I hadn't found anything interesting so I decided to design something on my own. My first thought was DeSoto; I didn't know which model but I knew it would be a DeSoto for sure. The only limit was a year of the car, as in January 1st 1959 Cuba was basically taken over by Castro; it's rather impossible to see newer US cars in Cuba...
I decided to do a 57' Fireflite mostly because I had a great set of drawings. The another important factor was obviously the overall look. I don't know what others think but to my eyes Fireflite is a really pretty vehicle.

I can release this DeSoto when it's finished but please keep in mind it will be only a "shell" without wheels, bumpers, rear lights, chassis and license plates. I've designed it for myself and all these mentioned parts will be made from scratch on my model, just like in Lada 2107.

By the way, I've calculated the scale of Lada and it's 1/63. DeSoto is in the same scale.
