Mille Miglia Custom Chopper Papermodel

Fellow Papermodelers,

This is a migrated thread from a different forum (some of you may know which one). I've brought it here as some people may not be able to view it properly in the other forum and also to increase exposure.

I've begun design on a custom chopper papermodel as a tribute to the awesome work of Marcus Walz. If you've followed the TV show Biker Build-off on Discovery Channel, you may have seen the episode where Marcus Walz appeared and built one of his great works of art, the Mille Miglia (Thousand Miles) bike.

Although I'm a general fan of custom chopper style motorcycles, I thought this one was extra special. I've been wanting to make one of my own since I could never afford to buy the real thing.

I got the picture of the real bike below from the Walz hardcore cycles website (beware there are is some adult content so it may not be safe for work or children--you've been warned!).

Walz Hardcore Cycles

I'm going pretty high detail on this one but hopefully I won't go too far and make it impossible to build. I'm pretty slow with my 3d modeling so progress has been slow. I'm also freehanding this one so it won't be exactly like the real bike (I'm also taking some artistic liberties). My plan is to one day release it as a free model. Any comments (good, bad, and constructive are all welcome).

Here are all my updates to date:

I am hoping you share this when you are done!!
I want to repaint this bike and offer it up on my website.
(I already have a paper Van for download)

Since I airbrush bikes and stuff...this will be a fantastic promo!

I would of course share the repaint back with you!

Great work. To me, it looks more like a Bobber than a Chopper but I like Bobbers more so maybe that's why. The bike is awesome nevertheless.

Good question . I'm kind of off and on with this project so its hard to predict when I'll reach major milestones. I think I can probably reach unfolding stage by maybe end of summer (for us northern hemisphere folks). I still have many details and some texturing to do. I'll definitely show the build process when I get to it, though. Thanks for your interest.

Cool, man. So you'll build it and custom paint it or the other way around? Sounds pretty cool. It will be a while, but when its done I can offer it as an unlocked pdf or PDO file. Hope that's ok with you.

You bring up a good point that I didn't really consider. I guess I got used to calling all bikes Choppers without really thinking about what historical context the name came from. Yeah a Bobber might make more sense... I guess the term Chopper seemed more mainstream which is probably why I use it--I honestly didn't know what a Bobber was till you mentioned it. Thanks for the comment :D

Just curious, what are you modeling you bike with? The renders are excellent. I'm, an old fart and remember the transition from Bobbers to Choppers. I think Bobbers are starting to show up more and more, and some bikes are in between the 2 styles.

The attached picture is from a really cool website.

Yeah, these bikes are before my time but still neat to look at nonetheless. It's definitely cool to see the evolution of bikes over time.

I do all my rendering with Metasequoia. I was thinking of trying sketchup but I fear I'll miss all the little keyboard shortcuts associated with Meta.
