Dennis's Mustang

A 1985 Ford Mustang Notchback is not a model that I would normally consider building, and if I did it would probably not be an orange one. Given that I have not built anything in recent memory, makes this choice even more odd.

However, this is one that I feel compelled to do because it belonged to my late younger brother. He loved cars and loved racing them. He was especially fond of "Notches" as he called them. Last Thanksgiving he was tragically killed while working on one of his cars. Due to COVID precautions and personal medical circumstances, Essie and I could not attend his funeral. This summer, my mother wants to have a mermorial celebration for him which I will also not be able to attend. So I wanted to make a diorama to send in honor of his memory.

Dave Winfield was extremely gernerous, and kindly created a model for me to use. My intention is to create a diorama based on the first photo attached to this post.

I have done a very preliminary build just to see if I really can still do this. The result is far from perfect, but good enough to encourage me to continue. The model as designed is about 1/32 scale. I found the multiple folds of the rear bumper to be somewhat difficult. I'm thinking of enlarging it to about 1/32 scale to make those folds a bit easier. I'm also hoping to add some details by building up the side mouldings, recessing the mag rims and mounting the headlights in recesses. I'll also use part of Dave's KoolWheelz drag strip as a base for the diorama.

I will post progress when I am able to make some, hopefully soon.

Curt

You won't regret this. An older client of mine, who was born many years earlier than me, shared my birthday for many years. I built him a TWA Constellation for his 95th birthday. He died four days later, but on the remembrance table front and center was his Connie. It was his most prized possession for those four days.

As I try to stress with any model, its important to:
1. pre-score fold lines accurately before cutting out any parts.
2. pre-fold and pre-shape all folds and panels before trying to assemble.
3. pre-fit...fold/shape until the parts hold their shapes without gluing*.

*This is key....shaping the parts until they want to fit together and hold their position without any glue!

Then glue stuff together.

***Glue one tab at a time...and let it set up completely (minutes!) before moving on.
Then match the same tab on the opposite side of the part to help keep things square and in line.

Designing at 1/32 gives me some room to make more angles and shapes.
So, thats what I did, since the boxy notchback Mustang actually has a lot of curves and angles.
I probably would have smoothed out those tail angles if I had designed at Koolwheelz scale.
Sorry.

Did you shrink it Curt? is that why you had some trouble with the folds?
Give it another try and follow my advice....

I did not shrink it, I'm just a bit rusty at building Dave. Rest assured, I will keep at this till I get it right, or something close enough to right to be pleasing.

Thanks for the tips.

One thing I didn't do when I test built the model, was edge colouring
...and it shows in my photos! lol
The flash really catches the paper edges, doesn't it?!

While larger scale can make some assembly a bit easier,
smaller scale helps hide certain imperfections.
If you are going to use the Drag Strip base, maybe try 50% build and see how it goes.
Otherwise you'll have to print the base in multiple sections?

Just an idea...ignore it if you don't like it! lol I'll shut up now.

Curt, do you have any other photos of the original car?

I wasn't a fan of that series of the Mustang, but it looks like Dave did it proud

Here's one more photo of the car.

Dave, your suggestions are always welcome.

It's been awhile since I added anything to this post because I've been pretty busy with the whole stem cell transplant thing. Now that I'm back home and somewhat settled in, this project is my first hobby priority.

I've printed the car body in a somewhat larger scale because I want to create a fitting memorial to gift to his widow. I have done preliminary scoring and a few cuts to make it easier when I cut this piece out, hopefully later today..

I'll post more photos as I slowly make more progress.

Body has been cut out and a few preliminary folds have been done. I'm going to add some heavier card stock to reinforce it. I have cut out the wheel wells to facilitate mounting 3d wheels. I'll kit bash a chassis under the car to mount those wheels and probably do some layering to give a bit more depth overall which this model will need at the larger scale. Finally I hope to mount the car with the front wheels off the ground as in the photo that inspired this build.
