My F1 Cars – The Driver Series
I’m calling this thread the Driver Series, because to me, an F1 model or (any open cockpit car for that matter) is incomplete without a driver. So, I’ve been playing with PaulEstudios PaperHuman to make drivers for my F1 models. PaperHumans are available in 1/25th scale already, perfect. But no clothing templates are available in this scale. Paul has pilot models in 1/33rd scale that come with flight suits. I upscaled these flight suits to 1/25th and made race suits. This worked well, but I didn’t I realize I needed tailoring skills too. It’s not bad. Paul has great instructions for his models.
I tried other paper figures models including Sunny78’s drivers scaled down, but they didn’t translate well for my needs. Last edited by DriveWRX; 03-19-2022 at 11:07 AM. |

So first in this series is Mike Hailwood who in 1974 drove for McLaren in a Yardley sponsored M23. Mike is more well known for motorcycle racing where he won nine world championships and countless race wins. This earned him the nickname “Mike the Bike”. His Formula 1 career wasn’t as bright. No wins, but a couple podium finishes were his best.
I started the building McLaren and about halfway through, I decided I wanted a driver. I built a figure, but unfortunately it didn’t fit into the already completed cockpit… Plan B: I made a standing figure instead. Last edited by DriveWRX; 03-19-2022 at 11:09 AM. |

1974 McLaren M23 – Yardley – Mike Hailwood
The McLaren M23 is a Spinler/M4RC10/ABC model printed on 120gsm paper. I used overhead transparency film for the windscreen. That exposed the back of the instrument panel, so I added the support structure (solder) and the backs of the instruments themselves (plastic rod). The steering wheel looked too flat, so I added layers to “round” it out a little. I made the glass part of the mirrors with silver paper. The shocks were kit bashed from another model and the springs made from scrap wire I had. I detailed the wheels by cutting out the spokes and adding an outer lip.

Hailwood is made of cereal box cardboard and 199gsm cardstock. The race suit is plain copy paper. The helmet is a generic design in Hailwood’s colors. I’m still learning how to recolor helms.
