...And to put the comedy back in the equation here are some Dutch comics on the F-35/ JSF:

Cartoon by Tom Jansen

sign says: "Closed due to crisis"
Cartoon by Jos Collignon

JSF - Where's the enemy?
"Look, that's something the Saab cannot do."
"The tail wagging is an optional feature for a small additional charge. To be determined after closing the deal."
Cartoon by Jos Collignon

Perhaps a little small, but those things are coin slots.
Cartoon by Pluis

And lastly, the most popular birds in the Netherlands:

Fokke and Sukke have deep thoughts:
"We don't believe in the JSF" - "But we do believe there is 'something'".
Cartoon by Reid, Geleijnse & van Tol.

Another funny thing. Foxtrot Alpha, a Jalopnik/Gizmodo/Kinja-blog, which usually is very enthusiastic about planes in general, were so annoyed by a quiz Lockmart apparently made to entertain kids ("What Lockmart plane are you?") that they made their own. Very funny. All planes had something bad written about them anyway. Heh. I was a U2. (see pic)

"Congratulations, you're an F-22! You've redefined what it means to over-promise on paper and under-deliver in life. Maybe you'll be ready in another ten years."

The Lockheed Martin official one says this though: "You are the F-16 Fighting Falcon! Like the world’s most capable 4th Generation multi-role fighter, you tend to be good at anything you pick up and have many talents. You are a hard worker and enjoy sharing information for the good of the group, like the F-16 itself, which has become the workhorse of the fighter fleet for 28 customers around the world."

I like the former better. At least then I'm not replaced by the f-35

F-35 project team says bad dogfight report ?does not tell whole story? | Ars Technica

Bsically, Lockheed Martin defends the F-35 by saying "It wasn't a fair fight. The F-16 got too close."

With everything going to "Beyond visual range" combat, and aircraft designers focusing on stealth and over the horizon kills, it kinda reminds me of when aircraft designers said there would be no close range dogfights back in the 50's, so they stopped putting guns on planes. Then they promptly got waxed by soviet fighters designed for close in dogfights.

Now every plane carries a gun, even the F-35, though it can't use it until 2017, or so I hear. I fear in our next war involving air combat, we'll be getting waxed again, as pilots frantically scramble to get far enough away from enemy planes so their stealth, anti-missile, and targeting systems will work, while trying to avoid being shot down by more maneuverable planes with guns.

They should bury the F-35 and upgrade the F-15, F-16, and A-10. The F-35 is a trillion-dollar hole in the ground kept alive by politics.

The main problem is they're trying to build a swiss army airplane that can do everything. Work great with knives, not so good with airplanes.
