You'd have to live among us to really appreciate the difference. I've lived alongside Americans and found their language amusing but easily understandable, and they mostly understood my English, but again they found my Cockney accent amusing.

I don't doubt that there are many more variations to American than just the distinct Northern and Southern dialects, but as Brit. I've never been able to understand how a Geordie can understand a Cornishman, or a Glaswegian a Brummy ... but somehow we all stumble along.

Myself, I'm a Cockney Roma living in a 90% Welsh speaking rural mountain village. Conversation can be difficult at times ... but it's always FUN.
