Advice When Meeting A Bear In The Wilderness

Just changed my Avatar, was using the advice below as my Avatar, now I have my airplane instead.

Here is what the experts have to say about meeting a bear in the wilderness:

Now this is what a bear has to say about that advice:

Pretend to be dead. It'll be good practice for actually being dead in a few minutes...

We've gotten a few black bear sighting in urban areas here in SE Tennessee, it happens.

When walking trails, it's best to make noise. That way the bear stays in the cover and isn't startled by a human when they cross the trails.

Far scarier to me than bears are wild boar/hogs. The conventional wisdom is if you are going to try to shoot one, make sure there is a tree nearby. That way if you miss, there is a handy tree to climb to escape it's wrath. Those things move fast!

You don't need to outrun the Bear. You only need to outrun one person in your group.

"Ranger Bob" says, always hang a little bell on your backpack. That way bears, boars, and other nasties will hear you coming and give you a wide berth. Laughing nervously from time to time also helps.

Of course, Ranger Bob also says it's easy to recognize the signs of bears: Their poop has little bells in it.
