1/48 scale Albatros L58

The German airliner, the Albatros L58 of 1921, with its large oval windows, Fokker wing, railway carriage fuselage and open cockpit has many of the design features typical of the first airliners.

The model design has been created based entirely on archival photographs collected over several years. There are no drawings.

Originally we completed the model to 1/72 scale about 18 months back but was not released released in favour of upgrading the design to 1/48 scale. This was also an opportunity to correct some aspects of the engineering and experiment with the design.

Beautiful! Will it be joining your other models on ecardmodels.com? As a fan of early airliners, I hope so!

I'll post some images shortly of the 1/48 prototype which is impressive in size. (Unfortunately my daughter stood on it so you will have to forgive the dent in the wing)

As a subject matter the early airliners have so much to recommend them, both in their marvelous, almost surreal aesthetics (I am reminded by Moebius comic book art), and their suitability for design and construction in paper. Add to that their unavailability as models and lack of presence in museums and the design process has an almost archeological aspect which becomes quite engaging.

I agree with Wyvern, the designs of the early airliners are so interesting and I hope your model will become available for us all.

Excellent example of an interesting subject.

A wonderful addition to the collection of Contour Creative early airliners. This Albatross has a superficial resemblance to the Farman Jabiru.

Terrific! Very glad to see this happening, and am clearing a place on the ceiling to hang it from. Have been enjoying the unique collection of odd early airliners on your website. Cheers,

Hi Jan
We have been writing and illustrating a new book on Art Deco Airports which has occupied the last six months. The Fairchild F.71 will be our next release. It is all finished as well as the instructions but we have not had the time to release it.

Regards

Terry

Thumbs up

Early airliners in the 1920's and 30's were always interesting as no one really knew what is needed and all were exploring the possibilities of air transports. Too bad the pilot had to sit like in a horse drawn carriage and suffer in the open air and rain....

I like the Lufthansa logo on the tail. Looks too modern for this plane.

If you are open to suggestion, then scale it up to 1/33 and have a detailed interior. It would look good next to a Fokker F.VIIb/3m
Nr. 74 - Samolot pasa?erski Fokker F.VIIb/3m - Wydawnictwo Orlik

Thank you

Isaac

Good to hear from you, Terry! I hope to be able to read that book on airports and to seeing the Fairchild, as well as this Albatros, all in good time. Best to Rosie Louise!
