Stout 2AT 'Pullman' 1920's Airliner NEW build pics

The Stout 2AT airliner of the 1920’s has already been the subject of a paper models thread using the name ‘Ford 2AT’.

With the publishing of the model a few days back on ecardmodels we’ve put together some hopefully useful build images and created a new thread more properly under the Stout’s name... not to downplay the enormous contribution of Mr Henry Ford.

From a designer-of-paper-planes point of view the Contour Creative Studio 2AT design goes back to 2008 when it was modeled in an unreleased 1/72 form.

Models created of aircraft subjects where there are no examples in existence and no manufacturer drawings take time. Multiple images have to be found to design an accurate model. There are gaps. We have yet to discover any interior cockpit images of the 2AT and the upper surface images were oblique. We purchased some period footage on DVD, which was scavenged for useful stills and a few other overpriced images, also useful, were purchased on-line.

This modern-looking airliner with its clean lines show William Bushnell Stout’s following of the all-metal Junker’s designs. The distinctive half-moon windows of the 2AT were derived the earlier Stout prototype. With 11 2AT’s being constructed there was also an amount of structural variation, with additional windows, placement of windows and tail plane. However the lack of available images makes it often impossible to link a specific image with a particular 2AT.

The Contour Creative Studio Stout 2AT ‘Pullman’ is our second corrugated aviation release (The first being the Junkers A20) and with the illustration we have been able to add detail connected with bulkheads and the structure of the fuselage. There is some nice engineering around the cockpit area and most of the nuances of the subject have been well captured.

The Stout 2AT is a ‘natural’ paper model subject that suits the medium. As far as we are aware a model Stout 2AT has been unavailable in kit form previously.

Thank Contour Creative. I have been eyeing this model carefully, after purchasing it from eCardmodel. One small question - the exhaust pipes appear to end next to or possibly in a triangular aperture in the cockpit side wall. Does it actually go inside the plane? Was this someone's idea of how to keep the pilots warm? Thanks

Hi Rob..there were different exhaust configurations..on this model the exhaust end is inserted in a small hole cut in the fuselage side and was used for cabin heating, the pilot being in an open-air cockpit.

Cheers

Terry

The beautifully drawn instructions alone are worth the price of admission.

Another wonderful Contour Creative historic airplane.

Thanks Don. Good to bring some of these significant aircraft to an audience. The Stout 2AT model will also directly lead to the design in paper of the 3AT, Stout tri-motor which I attach some images. At present, though, we are finishing the Fairchild FC2W/Fairchild 71. Byrd's 'Stars and Stripes' was started some years ago in 1/72 and unreleased with the current 1/48 design being far superior all round I think. Will post some images of the work in a week or so.

Cheers

Terry
