Thanks. Thesmoke is black polyfil (Halloween spiderweb) the top is a hand line stretched between uprights. I figured rope would be easier to replace after a battle.

Well, this is an interesting era for the Navy. Many features on the ships had been seen before...iron cladding, turrets, all steam power, etc. But it was during this era that we started seeing a lot of those features all come together.

I am considering a 1/72 scale with full gundeck/pilot station and removable top. I wonder if there is any interest in this idea...

OK, got that done, no I have to send it to gimp to get the text put on and some diagrams would be nice too. Looks like 7 pages of parts, two of them need 1mm card. That is 1/72 scale with interior.
I like the way the coal bunker looks, it will be improved some in gimp though. CT |

Here's my interpretation at 1:250.
I also took liberties by making the ventilating holes narrower. Without a top view it was not clear how big they were and I was not comfortable with those big holes in the top. I wasn't going to sent it because I am unhappy with the way the armor plates matched up. The joints show up too well for me to like it. It would have been better if I had used joining strips inside, but I thought I could do without. Live and learn, I guess. I am happy that you are going to elaborate the model. Perhaps next time I try it it will be better. It is a nice little boat and was fun to build. |

Wow Thomas Meek, nicely done!
I think there is a lot that would have been tweaked on this model had it gone into production. In the larger model I added 'running boards" of wood to each side of the aft casement as well as ladders. The drawing shows a single cannon with a 24 foot long barrel, a big thing set on tracks. I reproduced it as per the drawing but had the boat gone into production I am guessing it would have been fitted with a single 32 pound navy gun. Just some random thoughts on might have been... CT |
