CT,
Agreed on the gun. In the drawings it shows a thin 24-foot long cannon...like something out of the 1500s. This would not have been for a couple of reasons. Cannons 500 years ago needed the longer tubes to ensure the powder was completely burned. By the time of the American Civil War we humans had learned the optimal length to caliber ratio due in part to more reliable chemistry with the powders. Also, it looks like cramp quarters on that boat and trying to maneuver a gun crew (with a 27+ foot long rammer) around would have been difficult at best. I defer to the masses, but that is the first 6-wheeled naval gun truck I've ever seen. So short story long, I agree with you. I think the standard naval guns of the day would have been the eventual gun used. |

I may include one of the 9 inch Dalgrens I made for the Palmetto State in the same scale as an option. I hope to have pictures soon of a 1/72 scale with boiler pit and gun deck.

Sounds great, CT. I look forward to seeing the Dalgren. You're right. I think it would be a great "option"...build it as designed...build it as it would have been operational.

CT, where did you manage to find the original plans for William Norris' ship. I could not find them anywhere?
Also, I think you might be interested in taking a look at Thomas Gregg's ironclad vessel (a.k.a. Ball Proof Vessel). It was considered the first ironclad ever, but was never actually built. |

CSS North Carolina, and the 1861 Norris project.
Hi, Just about to start construction of the NC, but I have re-scaled her to 1/16th to the foot - why ? it then matches the models produced by William Mahmoud !
I'm intrigued by the Norris ship. In concert with Bob Holcombe, formerly of the National Naval Museum of the Civil War at Columbus Georgia, I am preparing to publish a history of the CSN ironclads, including any designs that may have had an influence on John Porter and the other CSN Constructors. I note you have a download model, may I ask where from please . |

I don't know how I missed this one. Actually the drawing of the Williams boat I used was a scan from the book "Old US Steam Navy part two: the Ironclads".
