And, of course, to go with the Alabama, one simply must have the Kearsarge!

Now, who do we know that can design these models? Whoever designs them, we will build them! Cheers! Jim |

Thanks for the comment and plan in Post #19, Jim. It answers several questions. I had already concluded (and I think that had previously read) that the turret-like gun enclosures were actually fixed armored housings, rather than rotating turrets. The nature of the firing arcs now becomes clear and makes sense.

Haveing studied the stonewall i can tell you that there were no turrets per say, she only carried 3 main guns, 1 300 lb rifle forward and 2 70 lb rifles aft. Some sources say she carried 2 115 lb breach loading brooks rifles, 1 fore and 1 aft. The guns pivoted in the forward and aft armored houseing to fire out fixed gunports that had hinged lids like the Merrimack. I have seen other models also showing gatling guns on the bulwarks. The model link i found and downloaded is somewhat more colorfull than displayed here, and it is full hull. I dont think i can download it here without permission. Ill, download the link monday. Now that i have takeing a second look at it Jim, that is the same model, but a different link?

Yep, that's the same paper model mentioned above.
The masts are a bit flat (being simple cut out template, not rolled spars), but it's a great start for this ship...it also didn't seem to have any gunports in the after turret structure, as mentioned earlier. Cheers! Jim |

I have seen several pictures that show slideing gun ports forward and i assumed they were the same aft. There are what appear to be dropping bulwarks aft to allow the aft guns a clear field of fire but only at 45 degree angles from aft or forward. Strange, but necessary due to the mast shrouds. Definately a place for Ct Ertzs with his ironclad skills to start from!!!! My intention over the years was to build an RC version of her and may still after i finished a half dozen other projects.

If this model comes to fruition, I would love to try building the Japanese version, although I have no skill or talent for rigging.

If this model is ever designed, I would also love to build her, but as the CSS Stonewall ... but I would most likely try building her at 1/600 scale.
