More PT Boats from AirDave...

Let me recap...
when I first started the PT Boat project, I wasn't sure about the actual colour of the PT Boat.

This all started with Mike's (McHale) interest in PT-73 from the TV show McHale's Navy.
That fantasy boat is an all-over Battleship gray.

For my model design, I had an interest in the Elco 80' Boat
which is the most produced Torpedo Boat in WW2 and used by the US Navy.
But after a lot of investigation I learned that the Boats were produced and delivered to the Navy
as requested, in a two-tone Gray finish...
Navy Gray #5 Hull (with red copperoyd bottom) and Navy Dark Gray #5D for the deck and upper structures

but after delivery, and for combat deployment, the Boats were painted Green.
Everything (except for the copperoyd bottoms) became green.

From there, some boats in certain locations, received camouflage paint schemes.
And the Navy experimented with disruptive camoufalges aswell.

Anyway...I decided to go with the proper combat look and paint the model green.
But right from the start, I had an interest in producing a gray boat.
Something that represented the "factory" look (and something that Mikey could turn into PT73!).

Since the release of PT 103 Class (in green) I have had a request for PT-109 markings.
(PT 109 became famous because of Skipper John F Kennedy)
I have also found discussion that centers around the idea that PT109 may not have "gone green".
And possibly remained in "factory colours".

...so, a short story getting longer...

This is what I am doing next:

I am producing another 103 Class model.
This one will be a "factory finish" version in the two tone Gray.
It will also be PT-109.
(which did, at one point, come out of the factory in Gray)

The Boat is basically the same Boat with all the same details.
I will however be adding a Bow Deck mounted 37mm AntiTank Gun
(which the crew added just before PT-109s final mission).

I will also have to add two Depth Charge canisters to the forward deck.
(Interesting story about that... a Torpedo misfire, caused by launching the Torpedo without properly swivelling out the Launch Tube,
resulted in the Torpedo hitting one of the Depth Charges and blowing a hole in the Hull!)

And I have already added a Bonus Page of parts to convert the model to PT-73.
yes, the TV PT-73 was not an Elco 80' Torpedo Boat.
To be fair, it wasn't even a real Torpedo Boat.
You have to stretch your imagination a bit...
if McHale`s crew had found an 80`Elco, they would have slapped PT-73 on it pretty quick!

stay tuned Boaters!

Dave, it's so good to see that you are progressing with the PT-109. Is this the thread that mentioned all gray scheme: PT boat colour?? - RC Groups ? What do you think was the 37 gun repainted gray or did they leave it green (I assume it was green since that was an army weapon)?

Would it be possible to release a "blank" (i.e. no hull numbers) version of this one and/or the P.T.103 version? Or am I risking the wrath of the monkee?

I think I have seen that thread, but no, thats not the only one!
I have found a few other discussion sites where the issue has been discussed.
And...
some early plastic Kits were presented as Gray paint schemes.
It seems to be more recent models that have all been painted green.

And...I found two old Books, about JFK and PT109, that have gray PT Boat artwork on the covers.
And...looking at some old photos (which are all B/W) there seems to be a variation between the deck and Hull indicating light/dark gray.

The wreckage of PT-109 was found...but the only pic I could find, was a rusty Torpedo Tube at the bottom of the Sea, so that didn't tell me much.
....

The 37mm AntiTank Gun was loaded onto the PT Boat, one day before it was sunk.
The Gun was never even used.
It was a standard M3 towed gun, with the Wheels removed.

It wouldn't have been a Navy order to install this thing?
I'm sure it was just some Crewmans crazy idea to take advantage of a salvaged weapon.
Theres no reason to assume that the Gun was repainted, but I have know way of knowing that.
Its possible that after the Gun was welded and bracketed in place, the Crew could have slapped a coat of Gray paint on it...if they had some paint.

I will produce mine in Army Green.

...

Wag

There are no "Hull" numbers...the numbers are on the Chart House, left side Helm Wall, right side Turret and rear A/A Gun mount.
All those Models you see with the PT numbers on the Bow are a fantasy.
I think only much later PT Boats, near the very end of the War or after, had some Bow numbers.

The green PT-103 kit is out there, so I am not altering that one anymore.

I don't want to get into producing all these variants, the PT-73 is bad enough! lol
But it only requires one extra page of parts as I showed.

Wag...why would you want a no number version?
Is there a reason you can tell me?

I have an idea...

There were several boats with "nose art" (for lack of a better term) that I'd like to build. P.T.157 Aces & Eights would be the easiest,as it was equipped the same as your P.T. 103 but I'd also like to try P.T.190 Jack O' Diamonds and P.T 191 Bambi.

Worked out the M3 Gun for the deck.

Hopefully it passes muster.
I tried to stick with the same method...
not overly detailed, keep it to basic shapes and design.
Thats what I tried to do with the other Guns.

And I will leave it up to the builder if they want to apply extra detailing
or modify the design any further.

I have already darkened the green colour used on the Gun parts
(it looked a lot darker on my screen...until I printed it)
...and I used a wooden dowel for the end of the gun barrel
(which I have coloured green)
but other than that, this is what it looks like.

Unfortunately my Life raft is glued down on the deck of my PT-103,
so I had to CGI the Gun into the deck for this mockup.
But the other two photos are unmodified.

Dave, this is great news on the modifications to your original kit.

I think the M3 "Deck Gun" looks just fine. There is enough detail to ensure folks know what it is and what it represents (us Artilleryman will add the needed details later).
