I do now. Sorry again. Long day. Guess I was in a hurry and missed the quote.

Testing begins!

So, I'm really not any closer to starting this design,
I just don't have the reference material that I need (yet),
but I am still mulling over the scale size and how things fit onto
pages and how things might print...

and that leads to how things might assemble...

I decided to start laying out some basics of the Chassis.

This Frame might change...but based on what I can see in some photos,
this is a good starting point.
The intention was to judge the overall size and fit of parts at 1/16 scale.

(I was convinced that 1/16 might be the scale to use)

However, after printing out a page of parts, I realized that I won't enjoy
building at this scale...some parts are just too small for me.
Maybe I am overdesigning? I don't know...
but I immediately decided to change to 1/12 scale!

Only issue is the part size...the Frame side Rails for example are now too
long to fit onto a single sheet...unless, I do this...

I'm not thrilled with the idea of wasting page area by putting the parts diagonally...and I have to separate the Frame Rails over two pages.
I like to try to keep parts grouped together.
But I'm sure I can find ways to fill the blank areas of the pages with other parts.

Anyway, other than a few design tweaks, the basic Frame assembled as intended.
...even with my impatient and rough quick build style!

As I said, I have already started a list of small changes and tweaks (for these parts)
but I can't really go any further than this until I find some more reference material.

I don't mind guessing a little, applying a little imaginative design and artistic license,
but thats only after I have exhausted the available reference images or schematics.
There are many areas of the Chassis and its construction that I am still unsure of.

Based on the current scale and size of parts, I would be personally reluctant to downsize this model and build it at a smaller scale.

But how many of you would want to build this vehicle at its current size
...the finished model will be about 14" long?
Its a nice size to put in some detail, but its a big size when you need to find the room to display it.

If most would rather it be a smaller scale, then I need to start simplifying
the design and make it less accurate...first step would be to design a simpler "chassis" with less parts and detail.

Dear AirDave:
After seeing the last picture Ihave to ask if you could include a bunch of rivits or bolt heads so the crazy ones(ME) could cut them out edge color and layer them. It is a small armored car is'nt it at 14" frame in 1/12 scale.
Thanks
MILES

I would have no problem including extra little details like that,
but keep in mind...in that last photo, those corner gussets are bolted in with round head bolts.
They are probably the biggest detail.
And yet, at this scale, they are still only about 1mm across!

Good luck cutting all those out!
If it was me, I would add drops of glue to create the little bumps.

But, you also have to remember, that many of those details are lost in construction.
For example, the top side of the frame is covered with another frame,
(so it has to stay flat)
and then the box floor
and then the entire chassis is covered with plates!

I think I will need to rethink this Chassis! lol

I'd like to make it visibly pleasing from underneath, but maybe I can eliminate
a lot of the hidden details? and simplify some of the internal construction?

or do you people want to build all that hidden stuff too?
(Its not like you can add opening panels to view the innards...this is an Armoured Car)

minus 25 points for me asking a stupid question.

If you were to orient the frame side rails diagonally, is it possible to then have the other parts aligned along that same angle? It would alleviate the problem of wasted space, but not being a designer, I don't know how difficult this would be.

I'm sure it would look odd to anyone buying the kit.

However this turns out, Dave, I will be in line to buy one and to actually try to build it. I suspect most of the armor buffs, especially those with an interest in WWI and Interwar armor, will want to have this model, no matter what scale or in which direction the parts are oriented. And 1/12 sounds just fine to me.

Thanks guys!
Thanks Don, I appreciate the support.

Yes, vermin ...stupid question...minus 25 points plus another minus 25 for knowing it and going ahead anyway!

LOL
just kidding...not a stupid question...but there is no need to angle stuff unless its just to make it fit.
I can just as easily fit objects into a triangular areas as a square one.
It just means there is bound to be some wasted space.
But I really hate the fact that two parts (of the same assembly part) are separated onto different pages.
I like to try to keep things group close together.

Its funny how the first photo shows the proper green colour I have used
and yet the assembly photos show a different colour?
Both taken with the same camera, exactly the same settings,
same location, same background, same lighting and same flash use.

Even the colour of my cut mat changes.
Why is that?

It's either a filtering effect from different angles
in the room, or Karma

yes...I agree its Karma...did I mention its a Digital Karma?
It looks kinda like an SLR Karma, but its just a Point and Shoot Karma.

I am sitting in the same chair in front of the same table using the same Karma.
Only thing that changes is me moving the Karma around to take the different shots.
I can't see why, that little movement, would cause the variant colours.
But who am I to question Krishna.

Regardless of what kind of Karma you are using the frame looks great. It is an impressive size with nice detail.
