Canadair CL-13 RCAF Golden Hawks (F-86 Sabre)

I recently got a request from a friend for more Canadian stuff,
specifically a Golden Hawks Sabre.

Since I was aware of all the Sabres showing up at ecardmodels (from Kampfleigger)
I took a look through the various liveries there.
Once again, not surprisingly, I find no Canadian Air Force versions.

So, I got started on my repaint with the original intention of a model for me and my friend.
I decided to leave the scale at 1/48 since the model is not overly complicated.

As always, I consider the potential for another ecardmodels repaint item
and since I was only halfway through the repaint, i contacted Chris at ecardmodels.
Thats also when I came across the Old Troll repaint (that I had missed earlier)
of the Golden Hawks Sabre (using the Kampfliegger model)!! HERE

oh well, there goes any idea of selling my repaint! lol ...but thats fine.

I decide to go ahead and finish my model to get a feel for how the model goes together
since I have never built a Kampfliegger model before.

The Kampfliegger model is far from perfect...but thats not a bad thing.
For a 1/48 scale model, I think its perfectly fine. Probably better than many out there!
And for $3-$5, the Kampfliegger models are indeed a bargain!!

However I do have some issues with the Old Troll repaint.
The work is clean and well done.
But the fonts used in the various markings are wrong and obvious to someone who really knows the Golden Hawks aircraft.
Also the RCAF insignias are all wrong.
(I stopped analyzing and critiquing at that point, because I wasn't out to
badmouth this model, I was only looking for a reason to continue working on my repaint.)

Which brings me to where I am now.
I have my repaint done and a 1/48 scale kit built.
I have something to pass along to my friend.
I also have a half completed 1/33 scale version.

But to continue and create a 1/33 "airdave" repaint, will require considerable more work.
At 1/48 the detail level of this kit is just fine, but to upscale to 1/33 will require adding and reworking a lot of details and adding many new parts.
the cockpit for example is limited in parts and (based on what I have researched so far) not very accurate.

There are some minor fit issues here and there that need to be dealt with,
but the biggest issue is the fit of the main gear wheelwells into the fuselage
and how they connect to the main wings.
The wings don't fit the fuselage perfectly and these gaps and misalignments
will become a bigger issue when everything is upscaled.

As I said, I don't want to continue badmouthing this model.
For what it is, I am quite happy with it.

But for me to consider the work to create a new 1/33 model, I have to consider the interest of potential customers.
Lets face it, theres no point in doing any of this work, if nobody else wants this model.

So for now, the design is on the back burner until I learn more,
and in the meantime, please enjoy my 1/48 build!

...oh...the little Wheel Chocks are my creation

I like it! And if you print it on glossy/gold paper, it would really pop!

Legion, you could definitely print on glossy paper
but printing on gold paper (as in a metallic foil) would not be possible.
You would need to remove all the base gold colour first (from the model artwork)
and since you cannot print white, you will lose any white elements
or colours that require white as a base.

Silver and Gold papers (foil) work best with simple black or dark coloured lines.
Printing anything more complicated will not work well.

HMCS...I'm not Canadian, but I recognize the need for more Canadian paper!
I like the idea of producing stuff that is not that common.

Unfortunately the Harvard is one of my least favorite aircraft.
(Although I would never turn down a ride in one!)

Very nice build. Very nice photos. I like the reflecting effect that lets you almost see what is going on under the model. I suppose you could do a page of decals for those that want to print on foil, but I doubt there would be enough of a gold foil model market to warrant the effort. I don't build planes, so I wouldn't be a prospect for buying, but maybe others will step up and encourage this project.

It's a very nice looking plane. Thanks for sharing.
