This will be a second "test" build of my new P-51B/C kit.

Gerardo (milenio3) is of course, building Jeesil Peesil Mommy as we speak.
But I think we have most of the major issues dealt with.
He should be posting up his report very soon (on my cutandfold Forum).
(I'll make sure to post a report here as well!)

I was getting itching to build something,
and with a number of requests to produce more RAF and RCAF planes,
I decided to go ahead and create a second "test" build kit.

This will be a Mustang III of the RAF 316 Squadron.
316 Squadron, based in England from '42 to '46, was a Polish Squadron.
They received Mustangs in 1944.

Kit is 9 pages, including:
Cover Page, 3 Instruction Pages, 1 Former Page and 4 Parts Pages.

As always, I start by printing the 4 Parts Pages on 65lb cardstock.

Former Page is printed on regular weight paper
and laminated to 2 layers of Cereal Box card using 3M Spray glue.

I have also created a Recessed Wheel Well option for this kit.

Still not sure if it will even work.
Biggest issue is the original design of the Wing to Fuselage assembly.

I can deal with most of the alterations to the Wing itself,
but the Fuselage will need some material cut out of the belly to clear the Landing gear boxes
and I'm not sure how that will affect the whole structure.

Hopefully I can give it a test run during this build.

Do you ever sleep? Thanks for all you give us and your awesome commercial designs. Have you ever considered the P-51 in Reno Racer configs? Maybe Precious Metal, Tsunami, Voodoo or the like. Again, thanks for all your hard work.

I'm sleeping right now.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Got started on some construction last night...

Making small corrections as I go...this is definitely the best way to prepare a model.
ALL designers should test build their own creations.

I made a massive error on the dimensions for the Tail Wheel box.
I will have to send Gerardo a new part for his build too.

Anyway...lets back up a bit:

Formers for the Fuselage cut and sanded into shape.
I will shape more as I install them.
My goal is a snug but easy fit.
Don't want to stretch the parts beyond their size.

All Fuselage sections cut out, along with joiner strips.
Edges coloured, extra cuts made, and seam joiners in place.

Next I will use my Knife handle to roll the parts into a basic shape that matches their respective formers.

Join each section at its seam.
And install the tabbed joiner strips wherever possible.

Time to dry fist sections...test the connections for accurate fit and give mysel a good understanding
of how the parts go together. (Better figure it out now before you have wet glue everywhere!)

This is where I found the Tail Wheel box size problem...I'll go fix that right now.
woops...I see I've got the camo colours backwards on one small part! lol
Onward and upward!

...

The Air Racer question again...

Two problems I have with doing some air racers.
First off is all the corporate sponsors and logos.
I already got shot down by Jelly Belly candy.

Second issue is the heavily modified aircraft.
Clipped wings, lengthened fuselages, streamlined Canopies, etc
At the moment I'm just not prepared to get into those kind of kit changes.

Good description of your building methodology. Excellent explanatory images. Beautiful model.

"Shot down by Jelly Belly candy" sounds like an entry in the New Yorker cartoon caption contest. I'm trying to imagine the cartoon to go with the caption. No. I think not.

yeah, I did a repaint of FG's Mustang for me and a friend.
Chip liked it.

So when I released my new D model,
I figured I could reuse the artwork...

and so I contacted Jelly Belly and asked them for permission
to do a Jelly Belly racer...and they said no.

Not very funny. We won't tell them about Ray's 1/144 Jelly Belly Mustang on display at the International Paper Modelers' Convention.

Perhaps you could work in some cats.

Maybe in honor of the demise of Hostess Products you could do a Twinkie or a Ho-Ho P-51!
