Namu pb4y-1
Dave,
Any chance you'd consider turning one of your B-24Ds into a Naval Aircraft Maintenance Unit PB4Y-1? Just sayin'.... Les (The Voice of Authority) |

That would make a nice model!
I would definitely like to revisit the B24 kits. I think its time for a major update. But thats a lot of work I don't have time for right at the moment. Its kind of like the Mustang B/C...I would want to redraw the model before putting out any more kits. That way I can make a new template that can be updated and repainted easily... and make a few changes. For one thing, I would like to add the Bomb Bay door details (that are completely lacking on my model at the moment). Best thing I can say, is I will add it to the "to-do" list and if nothing better gets in the way...

so, a year later, and I am looking at this NAMU PB4Y...
correct me if i am wrong since I am not an expert on these things, but this is just a USN B24 right? But with a few alterations. Appears to be missing upper Turrets (observation and gun), missing nose gun and nose/side viewing windows. Window bubbles over waist portals. Rear Gun Turret still intact...but no guns?. Painted a "yellow" colour and equipped with experimental air-to-water Torpedoes. ... My first observation and query is in regards to the actual colour. It looks very light and bright in contrast to the two Naval yellows (Orange yellow and Lemon yellow) So, what colour do I paint this thing?

That would be more like yellow orange (insignia orange).
As I said...quite a bit different than whats in the photograph and profile artwork. Yellow Orange makes sense to me, but nothing in reality ever makes sense, does it? lol

Here are some links to some nice color photos of a few JM-1 Marauders in the same yellow paint scheme. Scroll down to the bottom of the Fine Scale Modeling page.

yeah, I think I will go with the lemon yellow
the ID yellow is just too deep, too orange, for this scale. But I'm sure it is the orange yellow. It probably photographs brighter in reality (and those kodachrome prints really saturate the colour) but I think it needs to be washed out a bit anyway (at this small scale).

Since the aircraft was painted while still sporting the late-WWII insignia, I'd bet on 47 Orange Yellow. Here's a color chip: FED-STD-595 Federal Standard 595 Color FS 33538
And we all just know aircraft never varied from the color specs, right? Right? I'll be first in line to buy one of these, Dave. Thanx! Les (The Voice of Authority -- THE - Home) |

Dunno whether this will help, but here's a 2006 post from Hyperscale:
"According to the late Pete Bowers it was yellow, and since it looks glossy I'd say its Orange Yellow 13538. I can only find one overhead picture of a four engine Naval aircraft from that time (an R5D) and it has the National insignia on the left wing and a 3 digit number followed by NATS on the top of the right wing, another R5D from the same time period shows only NAVY under the left wing. If the airplane in question followed suit then it should be 309 NAMU on top of the right wing and NAVY under the left wing. The airplane's full BuAer # was 32309 (ex 44-40062) and she was used as a one of a kind test and drop ship for the Naval missle testing program at NAS Johnsville. Note the blisters in the waist windows. She's carrying KB3N-1 anti-shipping missles." Les (The Voice of Authority -- THE - Home) |

Got most of the model done. Just sorting out a few markings placements. And a few other details. ...
