Interstellar

So, I finally got to see Interstellar two nights ago.
And I have to say, I was not disappointed.

It wasn't exactly what I had expected, but amazing none the less.
I can see why many watchers would have 2001 syndrome, and not like the film.
Understanding the entire film requires paying very close attention, and accepting what you may not understand.

C'mon, its science fiction. You gotta give a little.
The story really isn't that involved.

For me, I was amazed at the technical production.
Christopher Nolan's works always impress me, and I had already discovered a lot of background information for this film.
The lack of CGI is obvious in the believable spacecraft and space scenes.
The sets, costumes and miniatures are some of the best I have ever seen.

For most people, the Robot Marines...specifically TARS...are the comic relief and loveable robot sidekick element.
For me...its Robbie, Gort, B9, Marvin and now TARS.

Everything about TARS...or the ex-Marine Robots...is so cool and inventive.
And they work...believably.
Did you know the robots are real functioning lifesize robots, built for the film?
Not actually self controlled however, they are remote controlled by the actor who provides the voice.
He was on set, behind the Robot, operating it and speaking, during filming.
In fact, he was a little taller than TARS, so his head had to be CGI removed from many scenes (in post production).

Anyway, after seeing the film, I couldn't wait to add a TARS robot to my collection of Robots.
So, here he is...in paper!

I have packaged the model as a three page PDF.
It includes a 1/6 scale and 1/12 scale version (estimating that the robot stands about 6ft tall - 1.8 metres).
The model is articulated, in the sense that you decide how to pose him by using the two supplied swivel tubes
and fitting them where you want (using the three swivel positions on each section of the robot).

I built the 1/6 scale version...and I am just about to assemble the smaller one.
Just to make sure there are no surprises.
Then I will release the model.

TARS Robot

Great news, Dave!

I can't wait to be able to build the TARS robot from Interstellar!
Looking forward to the release.

All the best from Stockholm,
Bengt

Looks great Airdave! I seen another version on the web. The PDF has TARS, CASE & KIPP from Interstellar, but I like more version of a model because it means more you can build. If interested in the link I can post it.

TARS is the star of the film.
(tars is an anagram of star)

CASE and KIPP have fairly small parts in the movie.
Plus, they are slightly different looking.

I might think about including some variant parts.

I just thought since you liked Tars that you might want to add these to your collection. you are always giving us such great models that I thought I could return the favor. Well it is not mine, but it is free. The file is 652kb, and there isn't any spyware or virurs. Just right click on the " click here to download PDf" and do a "save as" to where you want to save it at the bottom of the page. Here are screen grabs of the model, and textures from the PDF. All three robots are on the same PDF. I also thought you might be curious to see another version, and how they made thiers.

Dave, I fully agree with your comments to the movie. I was also very impressed with the special effects, vehicle design and model building. Plus, I found the story being the best of the 2001 story (the movie-not the book) minus the strange, much too long color-synthesizer-scene, but with a better end. Somehow a better interpretation of the 2001 book by A.C. Clarke.

Not wanting to sidetrack too much, but the week after I watched Interstellar, I saw this:

Wanderers - a short film by Erik Wernquist on Vimeo

A great supplement to Interstellar, I think.

Cheers,
Thorsten

One of the problems with the movie and book for 2001 is the book was being written during the movie, since the movie was originally based on the Clarke short story, "Sentinel".

I have added variant parts for CASE and KIPP to the model.
I haven't bothered to alter the casings...they appear close enough.
It seems there might be some slight panel line, articulation point differences,
but nothing you really notice since the other two robots have very little screen time.

I did however vary the computer screens.
Just grabbed some screencaps from the movie and overlaid the images into the models.

........

Yes, I think this is a great film.
It has everything a good scifi film should have
...and everything Star Wars doesn't! LOL

...
What is it about Carl Sagan?
I can't help but well up as soon as I hear him and am glued to every word he speaks.

A most enjoyable thread, Dave. Haven't seen the film yet, but hope to do so eventually.

Have recently been rereading some science fiction paperbacks that I bought in 1953 and that survived from the old collection because I particularly liked and kept them. This thread seemed to fit in with that reading.
