P-51B/C Mustangs...again!

I have been planning to update my older Mustangs ever since putting out the recent D model and all its repaints.

Last month I got a request for a new B/C model "Jeesil Peesil Mommy".
But I felt it didn't make sense to create another B/C Mustang before creating a new template.

Turns out there is an opportunity for a meet and greet with the
original WW2 Pilot of "Jeesil Peesil".
So that is my incentive to redo the Mustangs now ...rather than later!

My early Mustang Marek repaints,
followed by my redesigned B and C versions,
along with the newly designed A-36 and A model Mustangs
got better and better.
I did my best to keep fixing and adjusting as minor fit issues were discussed.

But there are still a few panel line issues that I would like to fix,
as well as the need for a better "vector" template that I can recolour more easily.

So, a complete redraw of this model with adjustments and new parts
is now in the works.

I would also like to design a new cockpit to fit this kit (if possible).
(I might also go back and replace some of the best sellers in my Mustang collection.)

...

Two white builds so far, and this is the result from two days ago.
looks good so far!

Some of the improvements with this template:
- exhaust placement, better lined up and straighter
- nose panel lines redrawn, better alignment
- a number of sections resized for better fit
- tail section resized to better match the adjoining section
- rear cockpit part redesigned
- cockpit area designed to be removed
- former redesign
- rivets added to fuselage (and wings)...not shown on white build
- coordinate all the center lines and belly seams

Ignore the cockpit cutout in this build...it has been altered.

This all sounds terrific, Dave! I look forward to the revised P-51B/C A-36 series.

Glad you had a chance to meet another P-51 pilot. As mentioned in my IPMC report, we were visited by a Korean War-era F-51 pilot. Mike Scalingi has found a wartime photo of him that I will eventually post in that thread. I am embrangled with short-suspense editing and writing projects, but will eventually resume the search for info on Maryland Air National Guard Mustangs, as well. I intend to get in touch with the 75th FG historian.

Dave,
What about redesigning your P-51D to B/C configuration and using this as a new template?
It is a much better model than old Marek design....

Thanks Don.

Not wishing to mislead you here
...my friend Gerardo (Milenio) is the one who gets the
opportunity to meet these HEROES ...not me unfortunately.

So, I will provide be providing him with a finished model that he can build and show to Pilot Frank Gailer.
I'll also make up a Print or poster that Gerardo can present to Gailer and get some autographs.

...

Mike, I'm not sure what you mean.
Changing the D model into a B would not be easy...thats why I didn't try to
modify the B/C model into a D. Made more sense to get a new D model created.

I modified Marek's original model into my current B and C model.
I also created the new parts for the A model and A-36 versions.
But they all have a similar enough template to work with.

The D model is considerably different.

If this new version of the B/C model works, then I will stick with what I got.
I'll be able to add some new repaints and update some of my older kits.
To be honest I like the idea of keeping the kit simple for beginners
and keeping it a cheaper model.

So, last night I finished a redraw of my Cockpit kit
adapted to work with this new B/C redraw.

Its a little simpler, but I think it installs a lot easier.

I've dropped most of the former pieces and just used some double
and triple layer cardstock for the dash panel and seat divider.

You end up with two parts to install.
The rear shelf with radio attaches to a main fuselage former
which will be moved backwards from mid-cockpit area
to just behind the rear windows.

I've still got a few tweaks, but overall the cockpit tub assembles pretty easily.
I need to reduce the overall size of the Seat assembly...too tall, too wide, and too far forward.
But other than that, everything looks good.

I'm not cutting out the window openings in this white build,
but heres the rear shelf fitted against the fuselage former.

[note: ignore the window markings, they have been redrawn, taller and moved higher on the fuselage]

And the final fit of the main cockpit tub into the fuselage.
It slides in from the top, angled downwards, and then rotated into position.
The divider behind the seat should serve as a spreader for the fuselage
and the tub is glued into place only at the top rails.

My earlier cockpit kit for the Marek Mustangs is somewhat over-designed
with extra formers and supports.
I see no reason to make this any more complicated than it is.
It works.

I have removed two main fuselage formers and replaced one, but moved it rearward.
And yet, it all seems rigid and strong enough, so I am happy.

Now, I am moving on to the redraw of the Wings.
Probably won't do any more test building since I am not changing the basic parts.
A full test build can be done of the final model in full paint.

Oh yes, almost forgot...got to do some Instruction pages too!

hahahaha too true!

hey, I have never hidden the fact that I try to make things
that people will pay for.
And I'm always honest about what projects I take on.
Either it has to be something of interest to me
or it has to be something that I can sell to pay for my time.

I could say "I do free stuff for people all the time"

or "lots of free stuff on my website"
...but I don't need to BS anyone...even the free stuff is just bait...

So, if anyone wants one of my models...but you really can't afford it.
Just let me know...and I'll get Rich to pay for it! lol
