Spirit of America Jet cars
I guess none of the Spirit of America Jet cars would be acceptable for your collection? wc

I want to do one of Breedlove's cars, but I have to consider what can be done
in paper, on a small scale, and in my koolwheelz style. And that makes it real tough with some of these cars. The first Spirit, along with Arfon's Green Monster, are the obvious choices. But I really like Sonic 1. So, we will just have to wait and see.

Dave, I'm sure if you had to squire up some edges to work up the designs,
I'm sure no one would mind. As good as you are with the paint schemes, and shadows the squire edges would blend in. |

Okay...so, continuing with the Land Speed Record theme...
I have wanted to do a model of another Campbell Bluebird, but they are all so curvy and rounded. The Railton Bluebird, that I already modeled, had enough angles and flat sides, that i was able to apply the "koolwheelz" style to it, and make a somewhat boxey version. The other obvious choice, among the Campbell cars, is the Proteus CN7. It was the car expected to break 500mph...which was a very big deal for a wheel driven car... before Donald Campbell died in his K7 Bluebird Boat. After playing with some ideas...and forcing myself to ignore some of the actual body shape... I was able to "koolwheelz" the vehicle...and this is it!: I have attempted to keep it in scale with the other LSR models. So, its pretty darn close to 1/64 scale. Originally I designed it with a fully enclosed body...meaning, the car had an underside. A full bottom, enclosed. But this presented a problem with twisting. It was almost impossible to get the top and bottom plates, aligned perfectly with the two side plates and keep the whole body from twisting. (One wheel was always off the table!) So I eliminated the problem with short front and rear plates. Just enough to cover the visible areas. And it works much better...you can also get your fingers inside to press on seams and such. I'll have the PDF ready soon and the model will be published shortly after that. Enjoy.f

BRAVO Dave. I see nothing wrong with the way this design came out.
I'm sure everyone here will give you high marks for how you solved the design problems. I hope you try the same approach on the Breedlove cars. Once again, great work. My hat is off to you. Thanks. |

Outstanding, Dave. You are a master at painting in reflections to suggest curvy shapes that aren't present on the model. Have you ever considered modeling Mickey Thompson's Challenger I from 1959, or the 1,000 HP Sunbeam LSR car from 1926? I think every male child born in the 50's built the Revell plastic kit of the Challenger I at some point in their young lives.

My father had the built Challenger model, back in the early 60s (in England).
I remember it vividly. Not sure where it went, since many of his plastic kits did make the trip to Canada in 1967. It is definitely a car I will tackle at sme point. The HP Sunbeam is beautiful. I will have to read up on that one.

You have outdone yourself on this one Dave. The curves suggested by the painted reflections sure fooled me at first. Well done man!

My bad - the Sunbeam was built in '26, but raced in '27. First car to go over 200mph.

The Revell Challenger 1 kit has been reissued as of last year. I picked it up at a local hobby store two months ago.
