Struggling already! LOL
Thinking about "how can I make the chassis so it will receive other bodies?"

I need to focus on the Saladin only.
And if I can adapt the model afterwards to build the Saracen or others, then...

I didn't realize how complicated the suspension was.
Theres a lot of parts and mechanicals under there!
I was thinking about a "rolling" chassis, with axles and some movement in the suspension.

But it is A-arms...independant suspension with swivel axles and CV joints.
Its gonna be tough doing this in paper.
I will need to decide on a fixed position for the suspension and create solid parts.
I also have to think about support.
As I found out with the Centurion, a model of this scale requires stronger suspension elements.

Wow! That is quite a challenge Dave. Although, I am sure you will come up with tons of brilliant solutions! I am not much into military stuff, but I will keep watching your progress for sure.

Do you need more pics of the suspension?

I may be able to locate a Saracen.....

Not at the moment Kevin.
I have an enormous walkaround photoset of this Israeli Saladin (above) from PrimePortal.
(I've already downloaded the full set of images)
More than enough, combined with the book reference I already have.

I'll call on you if I get stumped on something. Thanks

OK Dave! I'll keep an eye out in my travels to see if I can locate one just case!

Finally...an update on this project!

For those of you who showed an interest in a large scale Saladin Armoured Car model,
heres how the project is proceeding:

slowly

Life gets in the way
...I am working on the Saladin whenever I have time or interest.
Up to now I have been laying out my patterns and drawings
and trying to establish a basic build method for the main Hull of the vehicle.

I feel like I am back in time, designing the Centurion Hull again!
Its easy to see the design similarities between the two vehicles.

Anyway, I have finally figured out a basic structure for the central Hull.
Got a basic internal Former structure and the skins to go over it.
Just some tweaks to be made and then I can start working out the upper structure.

Most of the parts almost fit onto Letter size pages.
the Hull sides and long internal parts all seem to fit as single pieces, which is good.
I'll only have to separate a couple of the skin parts at their fold connections.

Its not until you get the main Hull together that you can judge the larger size of the model.
At 1/16 scale its going to be about two-thirds the length of the Centurion Hull.

The main chassis of the Saladin can be visually separated into a lower Hull,
and an upper super-structure that supports the Turret.
Its all really a series of angle plates welded together making up the whole thing.

But to make the paper model assembly a little easier, I am designing the Hull/Chassis in two halves.
Upper and Lower.
Separated by a flat "deck plate".

The upper structure can be built separately and then attached to the top of the lower Hull.
At least, that is my plan. lol
Next step for me, is to design the upper structure.

Great work, Dave! A challenging and very interesting project. Wheeled armored vehicles are so diverse in their designs and you render them realistically. Looking forward to this one!

Air Dave, your projects are magic and inspiring. When I was in the armour corps we always joked about British AFV's. They start with one little grease nipple and built a vehicle around it, making that specific and necessary grease nipple inaccessible. I see yet another kit to buy!

Thanks for the comments!

As you might notice, with this model I am trying to design around some Interior elements.
The Saladin appears to have more visible access to the insides
which means I may have to provide a better interior than what I did with the Centurion.
(Although, I am pretty happy with what I was able to squeeze into the Centurion.)

The strength and rigidity of molded plastic gives you all the space inside the model
you might need for interior components...
but paper models (of this scale) require bulkheads and framework that just isn't there in the real thing.
And it really interferes with installing an accurate interior.

But I'm trying to design the necessary crew and engine spaces into the internal structure.
So far, so good.

Another thing I want to include is some supporting axles,
so there is no risk of suspension sag.
I'm not trying to make a "rolling" chassis,
just hide some strengthening axle rods within the chassis.

So they will have to take up some space in the bottom of the Hull.

This is going to be a project to watch, for sure.
Learned of Saladin in a bag of little plastic tanks given to me in early 1970s. Had a model of that amphibious truck version as a Matchbox car, it was white. Saracen APC was also one of those little plastic tanks. They had snap-on turrets and were molded hollow with no floors, tracks and tires were flat, too, much like what could be considered a super-simple paper model of only the exterior outline now that I think about it.

Saladin is an interesting vehicle and I don't recall ever seeing its interior.
