Catching up

Although warned by Anne, I still managed to score that which was not to be scored and failed to score that which was to be scored and had awkwardly to do the scoring after the creature was partially assembled. I am going to continue nonetheless and see how it comes out.

Here are the in progress shots with the tools used for each step. The flaws really do show up in the close ups. I also notice that the Krylon spray shows up in some of the images, but is not noticeable to the naked eye.

In Image 1, a Wayne McCullough Breguet 14 in U.S. Army Air Service markings under construction.

Next...
as instructed on the Model Sheet, you need to prepare the Roof Wing parts by colouring the back sides.
Some of you have already jumped the gun and done this, so I better get this step out of the way.

for those of you who have graciously waited for your instructions...

So, lets cut out the rectangle piece containing the three Roof Wings.
Yes, the front Wing is two separate parts.

Cut out the block of Rear Wing parts but don't separate the parts yet.

...
Colour the backside of this block with paint or ink...a dark gray or black.
Don't overdo it...don't use anything that might damage or distort the paper.
You also don't want to use anything that will soak through and damage the printed part.

We just need to get rid of the white of the paper on the backsdie of the parts.

And then, put these parts aside for now...we'll come back to them later.

Super Dave you've done it again. I did D/L this model a while back but didn't know if I had the smarts to build it. Now I think I have a shot at it. All most completed the X-Wing and then into this one. Thank you Dave. wc

Moving on with the main Body, lets prepare the two parts that attach to the roof and sides.
If you haven't already scored the parts, do so now...and then carefully cut them out.

...
Don't forget to edge colour.

Part 1...the first part (to be attached) has a couple of angles, but the center section will
have exactly the same width of the roof (of the body).
Those lines on the center panel, are the simulated supporting "brackets" for all the Roof Wings.

...
Use a straight, or clamping tweezer, to make clean folds in the attachment.
There are four folds to deal with...resulting in side extensions that are at right angles to the roof panel.

...
Test fit the first body attachment to the roof of the Body.
The diagram shows the approximate location (dotted lines) of the side panels once it is attached to the roof.
Your main body has darkened areas on the sides to help you with the placement of the roof attachment..

...
The center panel of the roof attachment will fit flat to the roof.

...
To affix the first attachment to the Roof, I add a couple of blobs of glue.
This is sufficient to hold the part in place, plus it allows the part to float a little.
If it sits a little bit away from the surface, it looks more like add-on armour.
At least thats my theory.

...
Press the center of the attachment against the Roof of the car.
Make sure you have lined up the side extensions in their correct position,
and make sure the center panel is aligned with the Roof of the car.
The rear of the attachment part should hang out beyond the rear of the main Body.

...
The end sections (of the side extensions) are the only areas you will glue.
Press the ends against the body to see where they will contact.

...
Apply a small amount of glue in the center of the end section and press down onto the body side.
They should fit somewhere similar to what you see in this photo.
There is no exact defined location. Just close, will do.

...
Repeat the attachment for the opposite side...apply a little bit of pressure to secure the parts.
Be careful...the body has no internal support and its easy to crush at this location.
Make sure the glue has dried and the part is properly secure before continuing.

...

Cut the second (#2) Roof Attachment.
Don't forget to edge colour.

...
Fold the side extensions down using a straight edge of some sort.
Once again, this part should match the width of the Body with #1 roof attachment in place.

...
The attachment matches the shape of the main body.
The side extensions are not quite 90 degrees,
but you want to give them a little extra fold...makes it easier to glue them in place.

...
Locate the second attachment on the roof, by lining up the rear edge across the first row of Wing "brackets".
The front edge of attachment #2 will hang out over the Windscreens creating a visor effect.
Once again, there is no prescribed exact location...just eyeball it!

...
I just use some blobs of glue to attach the part...as before, I like the idea of the part floating a little.

...
Center the part, align it, and straighten it
..press it down onto the roof and over the first attachment part.
The rear edge should align with the first row of Wing "brackets"*.
(*cover the outside brackets about halfway, barely contact the front edges of the inside brackets)

...
Once the roof attachment(#2) is secure...press down the side extensions until they contact the body.
Glue in place at those locations.
Just a dab of glue under the ends will do.
Hold firmly until the parts are secure.
Again, be careful not to crush the body.

...
Once again...the body is complete (stage 2)...ready for those Roof Wings.

When building this model, I wanted to tuck that side extension piece, the rear most one
under the side panel from roof attachment #1.

I had a moment where I actually thought it might originally have fitted like that?
But then I thought, no it has to go over top.
But then I wasn't sure.

So, I dug out my original prototype, and checked it.
It wasn't.

So, next I checked photos of the real Tumbler.
Its not really anything like my model...LOL...so that didn't help me.

I just wasn't sure which way I preferred.
You can leave it, as I described in the last step of the tutorial, glued over top of the side panels.

Or...if you choose, you can tuck it underneath (like in the following photo).
You could also trim it off....and give it the same effect.

Its totally up to you.
Just thought I would give you that option.

Well . . . Sunday was busy, but I was going to get caught up tonight --until the almost 2-hour power outage. Looks like a marathon Bat-session tomorrow.

Managing to keep up

Although I made some errors along the way. Fortunately most of the evidence of my misdeeds is hidden.
