1/24 Scale Ford "Quad" Field Artillery Tractor

Sometimes known as a Quad Gun Tractor, the Ford 15A is the Commonwealth version of the Morris C8 Quad.
These were built in Canada by Ford and Chevy for use around the world in WW2.

Although it looks similar to the well known Morris C8, it differs visually in a number of ways.
The two main differences are:
the sides of the Body are flat (they angle inwards at the front on the Morris)
and the side doors (Driver and Passenger) are bigger/wider, and further rearward.

I chose to model the Ford FAT over the Morris because there are fewer scale models
and the Ford can be presented in both British and Canadian usage.

I have begun searching for reference material...I am hoping to get in touch with a Ford Quad owner.
Morris images are common online, but Ford FATs are much fewer.
Looks like there are three or four restored ones here in southern Ontario.
I just have to find one close enough, and the permission to go and take some photographs.

Usually I work from the ground up with a Military vehicle model...and when i get rolling, I will tackle the Frame/Chassis on this one.
But first, I had some interest in getting the basic body shape down on paper.
Its a curious collection of very odd angles, and turned out to be more of a challenge than I had anticipated.

But, with trial and error, I eventually got the basic shape sorted out...I can make a few tweaks and then move forward with other areas.

I also wanted to test the scale size.
I have settled on 1/24 scale to make the model more appealing to more builders.
It also means I can get away with no interior.
Paper models need extra support...internal formers and structures, that don't easily accommodate a scale interior.
I'm also trying to reduce the amount of work and time spent on the project.

No, I have no immediate plans to design the Limber and Gun trailers.
But the smaller scale means the model will still be a reasonable size if I do.
I am focused on the Tractor itself for the time being...but I am sure I will have more interest in the accessories once the vehicle is done!

An outstanding and very welcome project.

I look forward to watching your research and design develop.

This should be a popular model. Do you plan to design the 25 pounder and limber as well?

That is certainly a utilitarian looking beast. With the attention to detail you put in your models it should be great.

Great, I like all the CMP versions. Happy to see 1/24th scale, but would like to see it with an interior. Although they're simple enough that it wouldn't be overly difficult to scratch one. Then lift a flathead out of one of the AMT or Revell 40 Ford kits...I can already see this becoming one of my never ending projects.

...still messing around with the shape.
I just wasn't happy with the height of the front windows...
and then I noticed the shape of side windows was a bit wrong...
which means I have to move the side angles and adjust the roof line, and...

well, eventually...

and I am still tweaking the fit and shape of the front Hood and grille assembly.
Which is a bit pointless at this point, since I have to get more parts in place first.
Especially the large front fenders.

But before I do all of that, I need to sort out some internal supports and the Chassis Frame.

...
This is obviously a prototype test build only to check part fit and placement.
Ignore the colours...ignore the various colours you'll see
...for some reason I chose not to build in white, and I have just been plonking random colours on parts..

I have not dealt with the actual colour and texture of any parts yet.
I'll do that before the rebuild.

Sorry, Dave, but I also vote for an interior- with that amount of 'glass', it would be a shame not to take the opportunity to model an interior. I know it's easy for us builders to say "make the interior ", you have the pain of designing it. I feel that without an interior, the model becomes a large Koolwheelz (not that there is anything wrong with that at all), and seeing this is a unique model I'd want to make my mark with it - to get more people to buy it.
Anyway, that's my thoughts, for what they are worth. Whatever, I want one.😸😸😸
